Black painted/ Machined lip wheel cleaning

So I gave my teenage son the task of cleaning my muddy wheels/tires on my diesel truck a few months back. They looked clean at first but I really didnt pay all that much attention because they vehicle isnt driven but maybe 1-2 times a week. I noticed lately the wheels look like crap and found out he used COMET househould cleaner to get the mud stains off the tires. Well the Comet has stuck to the machined lip of the wheels and wont come off. Ive tried Chemical Guys(sticky citrus, diablo, decon) wheel cleaners, Armor All wheel cleaner, Griots wheel cleaner with various brushes and using my pressure washer as well and its still imbedded pretty badly into the machined lip of the wheels. Any other ideas of how to remove it?

I guess the machined lip isn't clearcoated? You may have to bite the bullet and go over those areas with a scotchbrite pad.

Tried using a blue "non scratch" scotchbrite pad with no luck. Only thing o far that removes it is scraping it with my fingernail.

Even if it scratches it cant look any worse than it does now

Do not use something as severe as that, try using a water based solvent degreaser.
Mix a little stronger then what is written. Spray it on then rub vigorously with a soft to medium stiffness brush and rinse off.
Wash the wheel with soap and water. Let dry, then spray with your wheel detail kit and it should be looking great.
Otherwise there are shops out there that do all this work for a cost.

Also, you can try using a brass bristle brush. I have had good luck with them, and they are not as abrasive as the stainless ones, and are easier on the fingers.
