Camping Tent for T4R?

So I am looking for a tent that can basically extend the cab of my 1993 T4R. I have looked into the DAC Explorer 2 and their other tents but they are all for an SUV that has a lift tailgate. As most of you probably know the 1993 T4R has a roll down window and drop tailgate. Has anybody figured anything thing else out?

The DAC tent should still work fine. If anything just use a couple of poles extending upward from the corner of the dropped tailgage. If you wanted to be fancy you could make a frame that extends out from the back of the 4runner, too. Consider that since your 4runner has doors on the side you don't really need to enter/exit via the tent, you can go in and out via the side doors.

I had one of those DAC truck tents on my Tacoma and it worked great.

Look at the ARB with the Add a room tent option...pretty cool setup!

You could look into the OzTent...it has an awning that extends from the tend that can cover the hatch. It also accepts walls for the awning, so it will enclose the area more.

If you're open to having a tent extend from the side of your cab, I've seen several companies that make awnings that extend from your roof rack that you can buy removable canvas sides for. Here's a link to a fairly affordable one: Awning Tent

I'm pretty sure that is the one that has a zipper that makes it so you can access the inside of your truck through the back door as well.

Is there a reason you want that over a different style of tent?

Spending a couple dozen nights in my 4Runner made me pretty unhappy. I soon after bought a roof top tent and have nothing but great things to say about it. Sleeping in the 4Runner is great for an overnight trip, but for a longer trip where you're loaded with cargo, it sucks. Having to take all your stuff out to sleep is not fun, or ideal.


The OzTent is an awesome system... Watched them put it up and take it down in like 70 seconds or something at the overland rally a couple months back. If I didn't have a roof top tent I would consider very seriously the purchase of one.

CVT has a cheaper option, but it does not include the awning portion.
