Forgive me if this is the wrong forum. Didn't seem to fit into Off Topic.

Anyway.

Time for a new sleeping pad. I'm trying to decide between the following two (but I'm open to other options if you have them).
I'm looking at these two pads b/c they are closest to an air mattress and have decent R values - I do not want a lightweight blow up pad at this time.

So, has anyone tried either? Thoughts? Something better out there?

Leaning towards REI since it's $40 less. I'll be buying the largest size - not b/c I'm tall but b/c I want the extra width.

i own the REI pad linked above except in 2.5". great pad camping on the ground. problem with the 4runner is it's not flat. for this i built a platform. also, matching the vehicle contours is important if space efficiency is a priority. i've thought long and hard about my setup on how to retain the back seat. there is a good way to do this, except not using any of the original seating and instead "rebuild" the back seat using parts of the sleeping platform and the same mattress cushion (except cut into different sections). the factory seatbelts would still be used for safety. i used a 5" mattress from amazon. this setup is extremely comfortable for myself, significant other, and two dogs.

The upper section folds, which makes the back to the "couch" formation. I usually leave it long to help give some protection from the seat metal areas, but you could double it up and have extra head support like a pillow. Being 6'2 I prefer the head protection.

I have that same mattress/pad. I built a custom sleeping platform to fit flush with the wheel well and support the mattress fully.

it is a bit bulky for backpacking but it is so g'damn comfortable, you wouldn't even know you're not on a real bed.

added bonus, it's NOT and inflatable so no worries about deflation overnight or, in my case, the dog destroying it.

Paco Pad

Haven't seen anyone mention these here. Paco Pads are a favorite among river guides and general "dirt bags" - which is an endearing term, not an insult. It's a great option.

I have the thermarest mondo king, and it's amazing. And self inflating.
when I take the rear seat bottom out, it fits perfectly.

Of course, the downside to self-inflating is wrestling it back in to it's bag. I've settled on a two-step process that works really well.

Please let us know how you deflate this thing. It seems impossible.

it's not quick. I open the valves, roll it tight once, close the valves,

do something else, and then come back to it, open the valves, roll it tighter, close the valves.

ok. that's similar to what I've figured out.
Although, it took me three rolls altogether to get it tight enough to fit in the bag. They really should have supplied straps for this.

I've been camping out of different trucks and SUVs for years from Cherokees to a fullsize blazer, what I found works best is go to Walmart.com and order 4-6 inch memory foam mattress they go from twin to queen size. I cut them to fit the back of each vehical I've used it's literally better than my bed at home.
The next best thing to do is add screen to the window this can be done on the cheap with magnets and nylon screen.
I'm 6.0" and I can sleep in the back with my wife and 50 lb dog no problem.

This got me looking so naturally went to Amazon & found decent inflatables & Autoanything has some nice dog (gonna sleep with me anyhow) ! The blow-up ones look good because they're like 5 chambers & blow up where you need . Canine covers has some nice padded but 300$ wow & that's for your dog :jaw: guess it come down to how mobile & how much hassle do you want making the bed up & taking down ?:frusty: And Bah Humbug to all :deadhorse:
