Cold start engine noise, video inside

Hey guys and gals, I'm posting this video to see if anyone else has this noise on a cold startup. I just went and drove a buddies fj and his sounded almost identical. But I figured I would post this here anyway. Mind you this only happens when it's cold out.

Heres the simple of it:
Toyota uses a shim over bucket design and the cam lobe rides on the bucket that is on the valve. This valve design is louder than rockers.

Ok I was hoping it was normal. I really appreciate the response too. I have the tick as well but it seems to be amplified on cold startups.

I am pretty sure my truck makes that noise. I have never actually gotten out to confirm though. Also, your passenger headlight looks like it it getting moisture in it- broken seal.

From what I'm learning the noise is normal.

Lol yeah I know. I need a new headlight.

Hey, my 2018 makes the same noise. Worse when cold outside. Goes away after about 5 mins of run time. That's what brought me to the forum to see if others have the same noise. I have a dealer appoint on Monday but I may cancel. It worries me a little because the noise is loudest underneath the truck, which makes me think rod knock. But as I understand it, rod knock does not get quieter after 5 mins of run time (or any amount of run time). Any thoughts?

What oil brand and viscosity are you running? Mine seems quietest on oil with lots of moly additive, e.g. Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Pennzoil High Mileage, both in 10W-30 during warm seasons and 5W-30 in Winter.

If you want to test the quieting effect of high-moly oil, use Toyota 0W-20 next time around. It has the highest moly concentration I've seen at 700+ ppm according to PQIA lab testing.

Also, rod bearing noise typically gets louder as the engine warms up to temp. Piston slap and valvetrain clearance noises, on the other hand, get quieter.

Thanks. I may give that a try at the next oil change (or sooner). The sound definitely quiets as the engine warms up. But I can hear it under car like it's coming from the oil pan area, which worries me. I does not sound like it's higher in the engine where pistons would be slapping. Our Rav4 definitely has piston slap. Sounds totally different, and goes away in just a few seconds. Granted, different engine, different configuration, transverse mounting, etc.

EDIT: I had no idea how cheap the Toyota 0W-20 synthetic oil is. My dealer quoted me less than $5 per quart over the phone. I confirmed that this was 0W-20 syn. I suppose he could have been wrong.

Aluminum engine blocks tend to radiate noise and make location difficult without a stethoscope. My neighbor's Rav4 V6 has audible piston slap in cold weather when she leaves the driveway...I know exactly what you're talking about. Really wish she'd let it warm up a bit in the morning, but it's been doing it since they bought it in 2007 and seems to be doing quite well.

You've got a great dealer selling Toyota synth oil without excessive markup, give it a try.

If it's still noisy a few hundred miles after the oil change, spend a few $ on a mechanic's stethoscope and probe around the oil pan and valve covers to locate the loudest noise source.
