Cool new-to-me gizmo at dealership

My Toyota dealer just built a brand new facility. As you drive into the service intake area, you drive over these 2 small ramp-like thingys set in the floor.

They're scanners, which measure alignment and tire depth and produce a color printout - like so:

Is it strange that the report shows your RR tire tread depth is low and should be replaced, but the diagnosis notes at the top says the rear tire have equal tread wear?
 
Similar to the machines we had in Des Moines. They have these similar items at my dealership that will tell your alignment for free by just pulling on, and I will tell you they are not that accurate. They basically do a "free" alignment test, but if they are not precisely in the right spot it will register out of alignment. . .so that "free" service almost 90% of the time guarantees a $80.00 alignment. Don't fall for this poor marketing scheme. They aren't accurate and are very misleading. These are all similar devices service depts are installing to "show" clients, but moreso to SELL to clients. Whatever happened to just taking a tire depth gauge to the vehicle as that should be done with any oil change anyway.

[MENTION=51186]philsey[/MENTION] Is it me, or did you get rear parking sensors installed? If so, what kind/where did you get them? I don't recall them being offered for 2010. My brother is bugging me to find a good kit for his RAV4. (I wouldn't mind getting them as well for the Mrs. )

Nope, standard fare IIRC. Well, I do have the Premium pkg.
I have sonar and the B/U cam in the mirror.

Agree, if I got a new car w/o radar, I'd want to add it.

EDIT: Got curious and dug out my Monroney. "Rear clearance sonar" was a standard feature.


Try searching the 5G, I think radar add-on was discussed.

Another gimmick to sell you something you may not need and as noted above - not accurate.

Thanks, but I'll take my ride to a real alignment shop for thorough analysis.

Next thing you know they'll offer infrared scanning that theoretically detects brake pad wear and fluid(s) condition...and of course...very accurate.
