Differential in a 2WD 4th Gen

Hi guys,

What type of differential do the 03-09 2WD 4-runners have?

I'd like to understand if it is a limited slip or if it's open (in other words is it really 2WD or 1WD)?

It's open, but they have Auto LSD which uses the brakes to simulate a LSD. It should work fairly well. It has some limitations, but so does a mechanical LSD.

Actually, it's an open differential. Toyota's "Auto LSD" is a traction control logic that's meant to emulate the advantages of a limited-slip differential. In simple terms, it applies brake pressure to a spinning wheel to allow more torque to transfer to the opposite side that would, hopefully, have some usable traction.

Interesting about the brake simulated LSD.

So if I stomp the gas in the rain, two rear wheels will absolutely not spin it sounds like.

The auto LSD thing sucks. It's so slow to react it's horrible. I've driven some reasonably decent electronically controlled open diffs, and this is most definitely not one of them.


It's more like a solid few tenths of a second of wheelspin on the inner tire, then horrible bogging as the rear brakes about bring the 4Runner to a halt even though you've got your foot pinned to the floor as someone is about to run you over and you added a tiny bit too much throttle when pulling out into the road.

3.73 if you have a 5 speed tranny, or 3.91 if you dont. think all v8's came with the 5 speed though

Yep - half baked electronic driver aids are worse than none at all. It reminds me of the early versions of traction control in the 90's (on mainly expensive cars at the time - like BMW). They would detect a little wheelspin and just shut the whole party down, sometimes with a secondary throttle body to close down and pulse the rear brakes. It was so clumsy everybody turned it off.

Same thing on the 4Runner, only 10+ years later there is no excuse for a computer based thing to be so crappy.
