Does anyone drive a diesel 4runner?

Hello from England!!

Firstly I'd like to say how cool (do you guys still say that over there?) it is to see how much stuff you guys do to and with your trucks! I could spend all day looking through your build threads and photos, but I'd probably get sacked (fired) from my job!

One thing though, most of the 4runners, or Surfs as we call them, are 3.0 turbo Diesels in the UK, but I'm guessing most of them in the States are Petrol? Am I right?

I have a problem with my oil pressure on my 3ltr Turbo Diesel where as from cold, the oil pressure light stays on for upto 4 seconds, and it's starting to worry me a bit now. Once it's out though, it doesn't come back on or anything, it's just the first 4 seconds after starting it.

Any ideas??

Cheers,

CURLY

All 4runners sold in the US are gassers! Ianb imported one into canada though!

Lol I thought so!

There's a guy on the UK forum that fits the 4.0 V8 engines from Lexus LS400's into 2nd Gen 4runners. I'd love one of those V8's under my hood that's for sure!

It's a fact that a lot of US Toyota 4X4 drivers wish there were diesel options here, and a lot of Aus and UK Toyota 4X4 drivers wish they had our range of petrol options. Maybe it's a conspiracy by Toyota to keep us all unhappy :).

Personally I would love to have a turbo diesel 4Runner (or better yet a turbo diesel 70 series) for the generally better fuel economy and especially the great range when crawling offroad. I would trade that for a little worse 0-60 times any day.

They are much 0-60 times after about $300 in tuning and maybe $400 on injectors :D, But from what i have gathered the OP's engine does about 22-25 US MPG, which isnt too particularly efficent for a diesel considering a new Disco 4 with a TDV6 in it will average 25-31 US mpg. And they sold the surfs/runners over there with gasoline engines as well, they just were not as popular.

I get about the same with my truck from a cold start, I wouldn't be concerned.

I wouldnt mind a diesel runner too. could convert it to be a Hybrid like my last truck (F350 CC long bed) and burn SVO.

I have yet to even personally see a Toyota turbo diesel but I have 3 buddies with older Volkswagen diesels and they all have the same oil light hanging on for the first few seconds of running.

You know if your unhappy with your motor you could always ship it to me in exchange for my 3.4L lol... I personally find it a little unfair that you guys get all the good motors and here in the states we get stuck with gas..

I think its more of a grass is greener thing. The 1KZ-TE really isn't any better then the 3VZ-FE. The 4Runner is a difficult platform for a diesel conversion as well... thats why I sold my diesel engine and transmission before swapping it in.

I love my 1KZ-TE, but I've never even driven a 3VZ-FE, so I can't say it's "better", but I like to think it is anyways, lol.
