Dog box options?

Has anyone here found a great option for securing two dogs in the back of a Runner? I have a hard time stomaching the $900+ custom double dog crates and feel like that might add too much weight being their mostly steel.

This would be for a couple of Drahts or GSPs in the 60-70lb range.

what about just nylon netting that goes up along the rear seat's backrest? a lot cheaper and lighter...my plott hound would be so pissed if i segregated her back there, but good luck

If you are set on putting them in the rear and love your dogs get a crash-tested kennel. We have a Gunner kennel for our golden and Aussie mix. Here is a link, in my opinion, there is not a price on your dogs safety.

I most definitely do care and wouldn’t ever do the nylon webbing after I watched a lab get ejected from the back of a pickup topper in a roll over. Luckily she was okay but she was pretty disoriented and then she was running around on a partially frozen river...

I currently have a ruff tough (now ruff land I believe) which I like but the back hatch has to “cram” it in there to get the gate closed and I need to be able to transport two dogs when we’re hunting.

I have the size large but could probably get away with an Intermediate, but that means I’d have to sell the one and buy two of the intermediates.

I don't know how many people you normally have in your car but you could just fold down the half seat and make room possibly.

I’m a dog trainer so I am putting dogs in and out of my 4runner all the time. I currently have a large Ruffland SUV and an intermediate suv side by side and it’s my favorite combo. They pretty much take up all the space from front to back and from wheel well to wheel well. I know a custom unit may be nicer but the cost would be crazy. The Primo pads that LL Bean sells fit the crates perfectly.
I can’t imagine throwing a drat in the back seat that has been doing water retrieves all day.

We have 3 Gunner Kennels. We did not have the kennels when we were T-boned and rolled over. That resulted in the best dog we ever had being killed.

The Gunners are no problem in our Ford Transit van but the 2 we travel with, an intermediate and a large are a very tight fit in our new 4R.
In fact I had to remove the sliding tray to get them in. The large is too tall otherwise and slightly touches the headliner if place near the back of the front seats.


So now I'm looking at double wide one piece kennels such as this one- Dog Crates | Dog Cages | TransK9USA | 4Runner | Toyota


Anyone have any experience with them?

Does a large Gunner fit in the cargo area with the rear seats up? I made sure to get a 4Runner without the third row or sliding tray to maximize crate options, but I only have one GSD and am hoping to go for something a little less expensive than TransK9. They do look nice though!

The floor space is just big enough to fit the bottom of the large Gunner but you have to allow for the inward tilt of the rear hatch/window and the rearward slant of the upright seats.
So it won't fit placed fore/aft due to it's height.

It will fit sideways BUT then you can't get the crate door open, you'd have to turn it 90deg (with the hatch open) to get the dog in or out.

Thanks! My other thought is a Ruff Land with the side door option, so I’ll probably go that route until I decide to spring for the Trans K9.

A side door on the Gunner would work well- if only they made one that way.
I'd like to see Gunner make the Intermediate in a long version.
Our 2 are a Labradoodle, about 55 lbs, and a Shepherdoodle, also about 55 lbs but she is still growing at almost a year old- and she is much longer in the body than the Labradooodle. Otherwise they both would fit fine in 2 intermediates.

EDIT> Well bit the bullet and ordered the Trans K9 - about $1200- ouch.
Weird thing is they are out them until the end of December and they don't take deposits or any payment to be sure I get one. They only get shipments every 3 months from Scotland where they are made.
Sure hope that works out as I'll be a little upset if we wait that long then don't get one as promised.
