Door chime mod? Is this possible??

Ever see a custom door chime mod that plays music? Here’s to 4am insomnia...Link below has a Volvo playing Toto’s Africa which I think is great but I am guessing some of the younger members will have never heard of. Anyway, pick whatever song you want, prank your buddy, whatever...this would be awesome! Anyone know if this would be possible on 3rd gens? Pretty sure this would be amazing!

Haha, that would make a great April Fools prank!

The only problem is that the bell chime for the 4Runner isn't its own separate module. It's a little piezo buzzer on the back of the instrument cluster. You can see it here. I'm no electrician so I can't say whether or not you can solder one of those modules in.

Well its a little more complicated on a 3rd gen because you cant just swap out a module. This function is integrated in to the Body ECU. I'm not saying it can't be done, in fact I'm sure it can be. But I wouldn't devote the energy to it.
In the early 80's I was working in a Chrysler dealer, and the 15A guy wired in a module out of a current model chrysler that would say, "a door is ajar", only he had it play out of his stereo speakers in his 72 Corona! True story!

Get an Arduino, learn how to code for it, wire it inline with the door light programmed to play the song when it gets voltage. Kinda over the top but exactly the kind of thing I like to challenge my students to do in my STEM engineering class (HS tech ed teacher).
Also a 4am insomniac - my flavor is that I can go to sleep easy but wake up between 3-4am pretty much every day with my brain ticking over stuff like Arduino, 4runners, CNC machines ... all the awesome stuff !

Hahaha... I saw this this week on FB. This would be so bad ass. I would settle for eight bit versions of songs.

That is awesome, we CTE teachers (High School Auto), like to say we have been teaching STEM for decades! If you have a lesson plan to do this, share it with me! I teach Auto Body and I have my hands full, but I have a few students who need more challenges.

:cheer2:

I just watched a TED talk on Arduino...totally amazing. Thanks for the lead...this opens too many doors to count :-)

The first step would be to have them just go through the basic lessons built into the Arduino Uno kit. You can get them cheaper and cheaper every day. I think that I last saw them for $66 on Amazon and they can be re-used. The kids will figure out how to expand on that base far faster than you and I ever would - they are digital natives to the Nth degree!

BTW - Auto tech and STEM are in the same department in my school so I think you are 100% dead on about you guys being the original STEM teachers. You might want to press your kids who need more to consider joining or starting a robotics team. FTC and FRC robotics or even VEX would go a long way towards prepping them for the next gen electrics
