0w-20 is for CAFE. In other parts of the world our engines can use oils up to 20w-50 depending on expected temperatures.
I got hold of the 2015 Australia recommended oils page awhile back. Chart is actually for the FJ.

The Middle East is different still, sorry don't have the chart.
15w-40 down to -12C / 10F
10w-30 down to -18C / 0F
5w-30 for 10C / 50F or LESS
I am currently running 5w-30 with zero issues and will be trying some 5w-40 and 15w-40 down the road a bit.
The clicking noise you hear at low RPM is the fuel injectors. they are solenoid valves that open and close. The clicking to the back seat when closing. If you increase the engine rpm the frequency increases and it is less noticeable. It is also more predominate on cold starts. If this bothers you you can add an upper cylinder lubricant to you Fuel tank. Lucas Amsoil and Redline all make them. Personally I use Marvel Mystery oil in My 2018 Limited. Use 4 ounces per 10 gallons. So 9 ounces per tank. You will notice a difference. You can buy a 1 gallon jug at Walmart for around $18.
Longtimeengr
I'm running a 30 weight as well and the engine is smooth as butter! Did you ever run a 40 weight?
I’ve used both. They both improve gas mileage a little but Marvel does a better job keeping your engine clean. I watched a video on YouTube where this guy tested multiple engine cleaners such as Chevron Techron, Lucas and Marvel and Marvel came out on top but Lucas also did well. My personal opinion is Lucas seem to improve gas mileage a bit more but Marvel will keep your engine a little cleaner. Both are good.I've never used Marvel, how does it compare with the Lucas? Running Lucas every fill up, so far so good.
Hey guys I’m pretty new around here.
I’ve been noticing what seems like to me is a weird rattling noise at startup when the engine is cold. And even when accelerating. It completely goes away once the engine warms up. To me it sounds like piston slap. But hoping I could get all of your input on it. Hoping to hear where there or not any of you experience this same thing.http://https://youtu.be/QaJfCV0Dtrw
The 4.0 is just a noisy engine. Check out "The Car Care Nut" on You*ube, he's a Toyota mechanic with his own shop.
Overseas the 4.0 is approved for up to 20w50, I'm currently using 5w30 and it has quieted down a lot. (this is in the 2013 FJ, same engine, but I also used 30 in the 2015 'Runner I had with similar results)
Hi guys, I recently did a head gasket job on my 99 4 runner. It costed me an arm and a leg took it to a shop that works on 3rd gen 4 runners, Once I got the car back I noticed a ticking sounds almost like the car now sounds like a diesel. The
