So the family and I are ready to extended our camping experiences to some more remote/secluded camping destinations. We have all the appropriate camping equipment and are looking forward to using our 4Runner as it was intended. I feel I can confidently say my outdoors skills are adequate, my problem is in the planning. So where do I go to find various back country trails and camping areas around the country? I've gotten used to the same local state and national parks close to me. But I've never really just taken a vehicle down some road into the wilderness and decided- hey this looks nice, pitch the tent. Am I correct that as long as a road is designated for vehicle travel in a national forest that you can camp away where on it? If not, what are some good resources to find out? Thanks for your advice. Check with the forest service and/or BLM. Around here as long as it doesn't say private land your good to go.

Fred and Suzi at Campground Directory and National Forest Campgrounds have come in handy for me on a number of occasions. My only recommendation is make sure you have your GPS and try to get there before the sun goes down just in case the sign is down.

Here is one tool I use for finding info on places I want to explore. It is a pay site but they let you see what you need for free, I have the page on Washington state but you can navigate to whatever state you need.

If you are in Ruston, you are within driving distance of the Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area in Gilmer, Texas where we are having our Toyota Jamboree this weekend. They have 1800 acres of camping and trails. You can do primitive camping with a tent, or hookup an RV. They also have on-site showers and toilets. It is worth going to just to try the trails.
