fix axle seal or sell

almost sounds like a no brainer...sell it. 2001 267k.
here is the thing....its for sale but am using as my daily driver while I fix and mod my new to me 2000. The other day the brakes started to pulse a bit going down hill....did not think much of it, next drive it was worse, then worse again. YOu dont feel it much on the flats.
So I should be done with my 2000 tonight.
I am slammed with work, took on a job helping build a garage, then took on building a pole barn so time is real limited. In 15 days I leave town for a week.
I know to do the seal job can be spendy on parts. However...about 300 miles away at my other sons house... I have most of the tools I need to press it....in a storage unit...a 20 tone press, the axle bearing tool , all of it ...from when I did my last axle bearings....but then I will losse another day just chasing after them.

Do I just throw a seal in , and some shoes and call it good or do I just discount it and sell as is to someone who might want to take on the job...I will be honest and tell them about it if I sell it as is.

Its all just time ~ you either put the time into fixing it (and get a little more money), or you put the time into something else... like your normal income (and get maybe more money?, maybe less?).

It's a hard call, you're having to pick between 2 Different groups of buyers. The DIYers (cheap batids, all of us) who will Probably try to nickle and dime you down way further than you really want to go, and waste Hours of your time doing so ~ or the people who just want something that works, now. They don't usually know enough to waste much of your time, but Might take it to a shop for a PPI. I, personally, always choose to list vehicles as "needs nothing" and price them accordingly (about 10% off the highest normal price) ~ I spend less time with tire kickers, negotiate less, and when compared with the couple of things I sold as running projects, sell faster. But that's just my experience.

There is the middle ground... toss in Just the seal and pads, note that it's a bandaid and needs to be addressed and price it accordingly. If you've got more work than time, sounds like it's smarter to just cut your losses (both time AND money) with the '01 and move forward.

thanks for your answer. i will be honest...this 2001 turned into a parts rig for my 2000. if it was better it went to my 2000. this 2001 is a beater.
if it does not go this weekend at my discounted price... i will do seal and brake shoes.
man i bet if i was in lower 48 this puppu wpuld go as is..
it has a lot of good going for it.

Lol, that's funny to read after your other buying escapade posts where things were selling out from under you. I figured that so long as it ran and rolled, it would sell.

If it's being sold anyways I would just ignore it. The extra cash you'll get (IF you even get any extra depending on the buyer) will be fairly minimal especially from the effort put in. Like you said there's a chance the bearings will be starting the go as well so might as well let someone else knock them both out at once rather than leave them with a half-done job or otherwise leaving them in a position they're gonna be doing that work all over again anyways. You could always buy the parts to include and just roughly tack on the difference to whatever price you had in mind if you wanna be a good guy but with your situation I don't see much reason or incentive to keep putting sweat into it

I am totally surprised too, maybe its timing and people have their summer rigs....or the ones that wanted a 3rd gen ...who beat me to the punch a bit back...are done looking..or they know about 2001's and 02's the ones I got beat out on were 99's and 2000's....I am in a small town.
but now I got a sweet 2000.

I can assure you it's a similar story down here in the PNW. Both myself and 2 other people I know went through similar ordeals - in fact those 2 others never ended up finding one to buy before they were priced out and fed up! The real irony is prices are back down to the $4-6k ballpark (last i checked), and now they have even less interest than before. I myself had 3 sell out from under me before buying mine, and there was even another guy waiting to buy it if I didn't commit :ranger:

prices and demand have been a real yo-yo up here. Ive seen 3rd gens list as high as 11k and gone in a day......now it seems its a holding pattern....my typical luck. and im middle blue book on selling this 2001, and just discounted due to seal/brake issue. My only competition....if it is...is a 2000 advertised with blown head gasket....asking more than I am....but 50k less miles

Good luck on your selling the PC SR5! I've noticed also the desire for 4Rs has slowed down further south from you down here in the Mat-Su. I know a guy down here got a 1st Gen Taco with what the owner stated was a "possible blown head gasket" for $300! He just threw a can of Bluedevil Head Gasket fix in it, some used 33's, cut out the fenders, and a DIY PVC snorkel on it and off the Eske falls he went. So it certainly seems as those that wanted them got their rigs for the season.
