Foam mattress for sleeping platform

You can go a little nicer and buy a full size latex mattress and cut it down to size for the 4runner. Super comfy and doesn't get rock hard in the cold like memory foam. Probably will run you around $180-$200. Throw a full size fitted sheet over it and call it good.

Luno Life makes a custom fit mattress, but I think it’s inflatable. Good reviews from the RAV4 community.

I sleep in the back of my 4Runner all the time, but I also have kids and family, so being able to quickly convert back to normal back seats was a must for me. I just made a couple of carpet covered platforms on 2 inch riser blocks that level out the surface. I sleep a Thermarest Basecamp or sometimes my Thermarest neoair. Both are really comfortable and quickly storable when I don’t need it

Air Mattress 2.0 – Toyota 4Runner

I wish there were reviews on it. I almost bought it except for the ship date. Would have been great to be out a few months ago when I needed it.

1. I bought an Air Bedz for the 4Runner. Haven't tried it yet but mostly rave reviews.

2. Years ago, I bought a 4" foam pad for my pre-Taco P/U. Cut out around the wheel wells. Cut out some 1/4" plywood to fit over it. Put the plywood on top for hauling gear or foam on top for sleeping. Worked great on numerous hunting trips, including elk camps.

3. Used various sleeping pads over the years in different trucks.

I’ve always bought 4” queen memory foam from Walmart and cut it to size. Use a sheet to cover and I also use the sheet to roll it up out of the way when needing the space.


To add, one big problem with an air mattress is that if it’s cold outside, you will never warm up, the air inside of the bed will never warm up to your body temp since it is a mass of non insulated air. as the night goes on it will actually get colder as the temp keeps dropping. When I would use an air mattress in the winter I would always regret it

Your right about the thermal properties of an air mattress in cold weather. I’ve used another insulation foam layer below an air mattress like a Thermarest pad. I like your memory foam idea. A “topper”? You cut it with a razor knife? The queen size dimensions fit better than a full size? Thx.

For sure with a box cutter. If you take a piece of wood or something similar to create straight lines and at the same time you put all your weight on the board compressing the foam to about the depth of a piece of cardboard. Makes the lines super clean and has always worked well for me.

I would recommend the FULL sized foam mattress in the back of the 5Gen T4R.

The one shown in this photo is a 4" thick tri-fold FULL mattress that has been trimmed to fit. Standard width is 54" and the width between the wheel wells is only 44". I trimmed the sections as follows:

Section 1 - no cutting - fits well between the doors (with the seat bottoms removed AND filling the void to support the head.
Section 2 - trimmed 10" in width total and centered the trimmed section in the middle section cover.
Section 3 - trimmed both corners adjacent to Section 2 (5" on the width axis and 8" on the length axis).

I think foam mattresses are a better option. If you need it cut in certain places, you should look for platforms that allow you to design it the way you like and need.
