From Austin, TX to Glacier NP and in between help

Hey everyone,

I'm doing my yearly cross country trip (last year's has not been documented yet), and this year we're going to Glacier National Park. We have two weeks. We want to drive to Glacier NP, and stop off at places in between in the 5th Gen. Our goal is to hike Glacier NP, but we also want to travel some spots in between. I'm asking for any must go places between Austin, TX and Glacier NP that are hiking or off-road related. The only trail I have on the list thus far is Black Bear Pass. No Utah Trail recommendations please as we don't plan on traveling through Utah this year. We are even thinking about the possibility of stretching up to Calgary. This trip is going from July 24 - August 8, so keep that date in mind as far as Trail closures. We are currently in the planning stages and are looking for ideas to put on the board.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

I live in Salado (45 miles North of you). I made that same trip last May. Really enjoyed coming from the South thru Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, into Glacer staying in Whitefish. If you spend some time hiking in Yellowstone on the way thru, I highly recommend driving the Beartooth Hwy north towards Billings MO. It's a very good condition paved road but in my opinion one of the best drives in the country. Extremely scenic, starts low in lush green forest and before you know it you're way above the tree line in snow and ice.

Must drive Beartooth Scenic Highway from Cooke City to Red Lodge when exiting Yellowstone. Then you can compare with Going to Sun Highway in Glacier - most beautiful drives in country.

Yellowstone is anticipating record visitation and last year was 4.1 million - don't spend much time there just to see crowd. From Yellowstone area to Glacier, recommend Seely/Swan area using highway 83 instead of busy and popular 93.

On our first cross country trip together we were going to take Beartooth, but when we got to Cooke City there was still like three feet of snow on the ground there (not on the roadway). The highway out of there had well over three feet, and was not recommended by the locals.

I think we're going to check out Yellowstone again since last time we weren't able to see much.
