I have a 2000 four runner 2wd 3.4 liter cali emmisions what kind of gear oil does the rear end take? also keeps throwing the code po 420 any suggestions on what to fix here

To be honest, it doesn't really matter a whole lot. Depending if you have ABS, the FSM calls for 75w-90 or 80w-90 in the transfer case and differentials, some configurations even just straight 90. Chances are though your local auto shop will only carry 75w-90. Any of that will work just fine.
P.S. don't get any gear oil on your clothes or nothing, it smells real bad!
The P0420 is a different story. You can try changing the rear O2 sensor (DENSO only) and that might fix it but if not then one of your cats might be bad. How does the exhaust smell? Normal or does it smell like sulfur?

I put valvoline 80w-90 synthetic blend in my 2000 4wd diffs. seems good so far

If you have over 100,000 miles, just go for the 80w-90. Synthetic is good stuff, if you can swing it. I used Royal Purple.

Probably just the sensor then. By far it's the cheapest solution for at P0420 so worth a shot.
