good route from Hudson Valley onto Long Island?

Hi guys,

I am driving from the Hudson Valley to Selden, NY on Saturday to look at a horse. I am towing my trailer so I can bring him home if I like him.

The owner told me that I'll definitely need to take the LI Expressway but beyond that I dont know the best roads to take. I will take 87 south. Just need advice from anyone who knows a good route through the City.

Bear in mind...stop and go traffic sucks with horses, as do potholes, as do lanes that end without warning. I guess those things always suck, but it can be downright scary with horses. I would rather take a longer route than deal with tossing the horse around.

Please advise, NYers!

87 south onto 278 to 495/lie take lots of toll $$$$$ they are hungry for toll bucks

OK so here's the route I'd take. Obviously take 87 south. I'd follow that down to where it merges with 287 and the 2 routes run together. Follow that to the Tappan Zee bridge and cross the bridge. Then when 87 and 287 split, take 87 south towards Yonkers/ NY city. When you hit 95 (called the cross Bronx expressway) take 95 N for 5-6 miles and take the exit for 295/ Throgs Neck bridge. Cross the Throgs Neck and follow 295 for about 2 miles and you will hit Rt 495 known as the LIE. It's a relatively direct highway and truck/trailer friendly route.

Keep in mind that anytime you head even close to NY city you're screwed with traffic.
