Ahh, 20 years! My 98 is also very happy and going strong.
You might want to take a look at your doorjamb sticker though, my 98's birthday is actually September of 1997! I would not be surprised if yours also passed the birthday month already!

A lot of features that are standard for 99-02's were options for 96-98's, even Limiteds. You'll find some real plain jane 1996 models floating around on craigslist or in junkyards.

I love these things so much there just isn't anything like a 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. They just don't make them like they use to.

Holy crap, didn't know these 4runners cost so much new back in the day. $38 grand in 1998 is a ton of money. Shit, it's still a ton of money.
And a locking rear diff was only a $325 option??? It's too bad so many people were so damn cheap with these rigs when they bought them new!

Congratulations, that is quite an achievement for any vehicle. If you don’t mind can you share any major issues you have had with the vehicle over those 20 years? I’m hoping for just basic maintenance for an answer.[emoji51]

Thanks for the comment. The only major issue I have had was a couple of years ago my right lower ball joint went out while I was driving about 20 miles an hour and had to replace some items on the front suspension (can’t imagine what would have happened if I was traveling highway speeds). In regards to maintenance, I usually change the oil every 7,000 miles. Original engine and transmission. Had to get one of the valve covers replaced because some dumbass overtightened it when I was getting an oil change. Every couple of weeks I have to tighten the valve cover bolts a little since they seem to loosen up over time. One year I went thru 5 starters (must have been a bad batch). All under warranty. Surprisingly, I’ve never once checked the transmission fluid or had it changed/flushed the past 20 years. Noticed some rust underneath so that will be my spring project as well as the sun/moon roof motor going out. I upgraded to 17 inch wheels and have been running 265/70/17 Cooper Discovery AT3s for about 5 years now.
