Hard Start & Burning Smell

So it's -4 here in MA, -34 with the wind; good times. I went to start my 4Runner this morning (V8 4WD 2006) and obviously she had a harder time than usual turning over. But when she did turn over there was a "bang" and a short, loud whine, kinda like a bad alternator whine accompanied by an electrical/rubber burning smell that last maybe 15 seconds. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone know what it is?

Just guessing, but maybe the clutch fan not spinning at first and the belt slipping? Certainly sounds like some pulley was stuck & not spinning.

Let it sit a bit (not getting above +10 today right?) & have someone else start it while you watch the belt & see if you can see the issue.

And believe it or not, it was closer to -10 here this AM.

Sounds like the power steering pump belt combo. The fluid in the pump gets cold thus thick. The belt slips producing a burning smell? Your front wheels were likely frozen to the ground in the position it they were locked in. To turn the key you likely had to cock the steering wheel some to take the tension off. The pump struggles to straighten things out. I not sure if there is some type of clutch in the pump that could produce the burning smell. That almost makes more sense than the belt slipping the way they make belt drives these days. Next time try jiggling the steering wheel a bit when it first starts till things sound better. Pretty common for me on supper cold starts. especially when the vehicle is parked outside with the tires iced to the ground. You might want to take a look at your belt and tensioners when you weather warms a bit. Is your power steering (atf) past its life?
