HELP! what is wrong with my 4R

Alright, First off I'm NO mechanic! so any opinions on this are appreciated...

This all started the other day when I made a right hand turn, accelerated to about 40mph and the truck started shaking a little bit. The first thing that crossed my mind was it feels like I'm getting a flat tire. My house was right up the street so I got the truck home checked out all the tires, their fine.

The next day I drove to work in the morning, everything felt fine. On my way home that evening the shaking kept coming back and going away through out the 15 mile drive home. Kept getting worse and worse so at this point I'm thinking one of these damn tires is about to come off this truck!! wtf is going on. I got out checked everything over and that was when I realized that steam was coming off of the driver front rotor from the rain and the rotor it self was very hot. Instantly I thought it has to be the caliper seizing up. I'm fully aware this is a very comon issue on our trucks.

Took the truck over to Toyota last night. Me and my buddy looked up underneith and found grease all over the driver front axle also alot of play in the entire axle itself and yes the Caliper has a mad grip on that rotor. I left the truck there so that a master tech can look at her today. My thought at this point (which aint worth much) Some how the entire axle asm is moving in return its forcing the caliper seize up on the rotor... not for the usual reasons that they seize.

SOOO I'm turning to anyone on here willing to read all of this! What in the world do you think is happening here? has anyone on here had or heard of the same type of scenario with any other 4th Gen 4R?

Sounds like your caliper(s) are locking up on you. Though I've never experienced this personally I know of a few folks who have..

I'm not a mechanic either but just from what I have read it seems like your cv axle has had a catastrophic failure. Hopefully something didnt give way inside the front diff. Good luck and let us know what it turns out to be.

Yeah... I'm kinda thinking something along those lines zonianbra , thanks. I've got a bad feeling about this

I'm leaning towards this too. CV joint failure, which by continuing to drive with a failing CV joint caused bearing failure which can cause caliper and brake failure. If you feel something that abnormal in the driveline its a sign that something is seriously wrong, stop immediately before you cause more damage. Hopefully your damage is not as extensive. Leading up the this incident did you hear any clicking or knocking weeks or days before the vibration?

Yeah I stoped driving it as soon as I could. There has been no noises or anything out of the ordinary. truck always drives nice

Hopefully it didn't do too much secondary damage but ANY length of driving with a busted CV joint can cause catostrophic damage to the driveline, especially around the hub of the broken CV joint. Usually something that has those symptoms is a stop and tow situation. I've got my fingers crossed for you. If the problem is what I'm anticipating (which I hope it's not) it will probably cost a couple of thousand dollars at the dealership. Once they have diagnosed the problem it might be worth your time to get some bids from local shops to get the work done and paying to have the truck towed there for the repairs.

Sorry I'm just now getting back to this. It all boiled down to the driver side front caliper was seizing (Big Suprise lol) and a torn CV boot which explains all of the grease everywhere.

The night I dropped the truck off at Toyota, my friend that looked at it was rushing to get out of there and get home to his wife and new baby. He had put the idea in my head that this was a much more serious axle related issue. Obviously that was not an accurate diagnoses on his part. Ohh well...

They ended up installing all new front calipers, rotors and pads. They also clamped my torn CV boot. This ended up costing me $ 490.00 which sucks, but hell it can always be worse!! Thank god they still give me my employee discount from when I used to work there.

I going to make sure that the slide pins get greased up often on these new calipers. Hopefuly they'll last a little longer then 1 1/2 years. I appreciate all who responded, I was geeking out a little, fearing the worst LOL
