Heresy? Subaru...

Subaru and Toyota- the two iconic brands for outdoors enthusiasts. Jeep too, though only because I now have one!:D
 
Definitely like the Forester, but this will be a "jack of all trades" and I need more size than the Forrester offers. I love the idea of a turbo, but with as many miles as I put on a vehicle, I'm leaning towards the H6 with the traditional auto versus the CVT - more proven technology for the long haul. A 4Runner, Forrester, & Jeep would be a great combo, but finances don't allow it. I'm not looking forward to a payment after several years without!

Outdoors - have to wait for the 2013 with the modified roof rack with more spread to haul 2 whitewater canoes - and will want to add a rear hitch for the bikes...

Subarus & Toyotas seem to rule the roost here in NC for folks with toys, at least toys without motors...

From all you have said, the Outback will be the best option. I can think of no other.

I sold my 07 WRX Limited for my 4runner, so I have some subie love. I loved that car and like Subarus in general. My dealer would give me a new generation Outback as a loaner when I brought the WRX in for service. It was comfortable enough, but that CVT was TERRIBLE. In terms of size and comfort, you'll be fine coming from the 4runner, provided you don't wheel too hard. If you are ok with the CVT, which I just couldn't get used to, then I would say go for it. It has plenty of pickup and got great gas mileage.

If I do it, it will be the 6 cylinder with the 5 speed auto - the cars I've rented on business travel that had CVT's were pretty awful. I always felt like I was driving a car with a slipping clutch...

I would go for it, then. Just don't expect the crazy gas mileage the CVT gets. The flat 6 is an awesome motor.

when i was looking at Subaru's i remember the H6-R fuel economy wasnt much better than many newer v8 SUV/Trucks with EPA estimated 19 city and 24 highway
 
I've owned two Subarus. First one was a 1999 2,5rs, heavily modified, second one was a 2007 STi.

Always loved those cars, if you can forget the super cheap and bad looking interior. That's what made me change my mind on buying a new one. I used to not care, but with age, I guess I need a little more comfort. I absolutely loved the 1999, and not so much the STi. I think I was a little nostalgic when I bought it and quickly wanted to switch for something more comfortable.

My ex boss had a brand new Legacy GT, and I was again disappointed by the interior. Same for the new Forester.

I always thought you pay for the engineering and mechanical parts when buying a Subaru, not for the styling!! Someone could say the same about Toyota for the reliability, but the 4runner has a nice looking and better quality interior.

When I've rented Subarus (I think both the Outback and the Forester), I found them both to be nice-driving and capable vehicles. I put about 300 mi city/hiway on each. I found them to be closer to a car than an SUV.

However, as Ti-Ben pointed out, the interior appears to use very cheap plastics. Also things like cabin noise (road, wind) really were more apparent. The doors felt light and cheap, which probably meant no insulation. Does that mean anything mechanically? No. But if I were to spend 6 years with a vehicle then it's something I would strongly consider.
