Hood Scoop Snorkel

Has anybody converted the hood scoop on the Sport Edition to a snorkel?

It does not seem that it would take much to do it

I don't think anyone has, there has been a lot of discussion about how it wouldn't work as a ram air because of it's location and direction.

The snorkel idea seems a little more sound since you're not trying to get more air, just higher up air.

I thought about doing this a long time ago when I first got the 4Runner because I wanted the scoop to be functional. But someone pointed out that it would only be like 8~12 inches higher than the factory position and that in water crossings it would just funnel water into the engine if it were deep enough to create a bow wake.

Doesn't the snorkel help with performance too by drawing in cooler air? I was thinking more about performance than water crossing.

I envision some kind of plenum connected to the scoop, running along the underside of the hood to the firewall. Then some kind of connector box that either swivels or disconnects when the hood is open. The connector would connect to the air intake on the engine.

I agree it would not be as good for a water crossing situation as a snorkel but I was not looking at it from that position.

The snorkel is most effective for getting cleaner air from a higher position. Picture yourself driving dusty roads everyday and your air is being sucked in from its current low position. It is sucking in dusty air. Now install a snorkel, you are now sucking in air that is 2-3' higher which has less dust in suspension in the air. If you turn the inlet on the snorkel to the rear you have the best chance of sucking in cleaner air.

When I lived out west I used a Mantec on my Rover. Air filter lasted much longer between cleaning given the dry dusty conditions. I did not notice a difference in IAT. Not my truck in pic, found pic online.
