Horrible MPG on my 2003 4.0 V6

Mpg

Just got my '06 4Runner (101k miles) about 3 weeks ago. Kept track of fuel economy on the back and forth to work commute for two weeks.

First week 18.3 mpg, second week 18.8 mpg. This is with a V8 and mostly interstate driving 17 miles one way. It is calculated. The dash lieometer (as another poster aptly put it) is reading 19.7 for the last week. Daytime high temps are in the upper 60s, low 70s. About 15 sec warmup time.

it goes in next week for a timing belt/water pump change out since there was no record of it having been done.

This is what i don't understand why I'm only getting 13-14 when V8 owners are getting 18MPG with full time all wheel drive and some V6 with even higher MPG.

I already drive like a grandma and there's nothing in my trunk. Diff oil was done 50k miles ago.

I understand that MPG will take a hit with cold weather and winter gas, should it be that much?

I do mostly city driving and I live in Vancouver... it doesn't get that cold here...and I rarely use 4wd

The mileage I'm getting is worse than my 3rd gen 4runner, that's why I'm thinking there maybe is something wrong.

I'll do some highway driving and see if the difference is that much.

As two people already said above in this thread, no it does not sound normal in your case. Get your car checked out.

try to have your thermostat replaced. that could work. a few people reported in the other threads that their MPG improved significantly. your thermostat could be starting to open too early. i have not tried it but will do in the next few weeks.

yeah I do short commute most of the time. But I rarely drive in 4WD. otherwise it's gonna cost even more fuel. I gave up on spending 10 min warming up, it consumes tooooo much gas. What I do now is just a short 1min warm up. I don't think that is a main factor.

Im not sure I agree it burns more gas that would be noticeable

I drive highways summer winter in 2 wheel or 4 wheel when needed and milage stays the same in 2 wheel or 4 wheel. On top of the amount of idle time done in the truck. Actually the little display in the truck sadly I trust as it hasn't failed me yet telling me when i really need to get gas. U can easily if you balls are big enough to push it when it says zero left. I safely did 20 miles more at highway speeds before deciding not to push it. Tho its not for the weak if you have a issue with being stranded
