I once had a cop behind me at the traffic lights and it was night time. He had only one headlight working. I leaned out the window and waved to him to pull up next to me which he did. I told him that I just wanted to let him know about the blown light in case he didn't realize. He laughed, thanked me and said he'll get it fixed right away.
Then a few years ago the exact opposite happened. This time the cop was in a bad mood I think because he wanted to ticket me for the blown headlight. Luck was on my side because at that time I was new to the States and only had my australian drivers licence, so he had no idea on how to deal with that and he let me go with a 'warning'.

I don't think he didn't know how to deal with it, rather since you had an australian passport he probably thought why bother you will be gone anyways. just my $.02

I honestly can not see many benefits to living there, no offense to the members that do.

Without going too far off topic, depending where in CA (I'm by the coast), there's accessibility to a lot, beaches, lakes, mountains, etc. If I want to be in the snow, heat or anything in between it's not far away. IMO, I couldn't imgine living anywhere else.
