How much is the pumpkin from a 3rd gen elocker worth?

Hey guys I am trying to figure out what a third member geared as 4.30 in an OEM rear elocker is worth. No rear housing but includes the actuator motor, motor cover, and wiring pigtail. Overall good condition and located in Phoenix metro area.

I'll hopefully get some opinions from you all... :pop2:

Mods: this is not a posting for sale, but just trying to see what it is worth as I clean out my collection of old parts. If it needs to be moved, that's good with me.

Thanks

The easy answer is "it is worth what someone is willing to pay"

That being said, condition of the elocker mechanism and gears/backlash is a factor that has subjective value to some more than others.

Perspective
A truck axle, D to D at LKQ is $205 before core and tax while just the carrier is $88. Obviously this isn't a salvage part, but many guys talk about buying complete elocker rear ends for $500, however they are often over $1K on ebay.

So the price is generally what the market will bear: and what a buyer is willing to pay/seller willing to let it go for.

$400 is what I was seeing. I bought an entire e-locker axle housing from drum to drum for $600 from the classifieds. E-bay is always overpriced for items like this.

$400-$500 for third only, and around $700 for a complete axle drum to drum on most of the Toyota forum classifieds. Prices are a bit more unpredictable on Craigslist or eBay.

I got very lucky last year and bought a front and rear axle set with 4.30 gears and e locker for $550. I am keeping an eye out for a spare e locker 3rd but my price point is around $200. If I have to go much higher than that it is too expensive to be a shelf part.

I ran into a taco (leaf spring) d to d elocked 4:10 with harness at a local yard here last year for $500.

That's definitely a steal. Did they even know what they had and were selling?

The guy had picked the axles up for his 3rd gen. He went through both of them replacing gaskets and painting them. Before he was able to install them his 3rd gen was in an accident and totaled. He held onto them for a year before finally putting them up for sale. Real cool guy.

The axles ride great under my rig now.

I've purchased two used e-lockers...

One had 4.10 gears and I bought the whole axle drum to drum from a Tacoma with around 100K on it... the guy went long travel and installed a Tundra axle out back. $500.

The other had 8K on fresh Yukon 4.88s, set up by a reputable shop. It was immaculately clean and the guy sold it because he had put Toyota based solid axles under his rig, then upgraded to one tons. $500.

The core charge for ECGS is $550 now, I think, so the price should be at or below that level for a lower mileage stock geared (4.10/4.30) 3rd, IMO.

I've seen many stock diffs for sale in the $350-400 range, locally and on the forums. Geared diffs are much more rare

mine was 600, drum to drum
I might have found one cheaper, but did not have time to hunt and I wanted to get it in before the snow started falling

Octane nailed it.
Personally, I value an elocker 3rd only at $350-400- depending on condition.
That being said, they are pretty easy to come by in my area, as Limiteds are always being parted out on CL. If they are scarce in your area, someone might be willing to pay more, as shipping them can be spendy.

Limiteds in general are considered the holy grail of 4runners in LA, which I don't understand (no sport hood and I hate leather) but I get it, top o the line - also a very subjective perspective

I saw a 99 base model (mileage unknown) at a gas station in my area that usually sells for $$$, with a sign for $4600, it must have a ton of miles. If it were a Limited, however, it would be $8K or more

The recycler market here is nuts and rear diffs disappear first from the local yards if they are worth anything. I remember looking for a GM 8.5" LSD carrier for literally years once and finally ended up buying one online and having it shipped, but like Tyler said, shipping an axle D to D is cost-prohibitive and if it turns out to be junk, you're fvcked

Update, 3 months later...

I ended up getting parts from a Limited - rear elocker, drum to drum, ECU, RR Diff switch and related wiring along with the matching front diff and half shafts for a grand total of $700. Checked the gear oil from each and it looked nearly brand new.

Not a smoking deal, but not a bad deal either in my opinion.

Hope this thread helps someone somehow.

Originally posted to try and see if I wanted to sell the 3rd member that I have in my personal parts inventory. In the process ended up finding matching front and rear diffs that I could use for a future build.

Now need to check out both of the rear pumpkins and decide which one to keep, and which one to sell. Decisions, decisions...

Jesus, I thought $400 for a drum to drum elocker was steep. Hard for me to justify that kind of cash when I can buy full parts cars for $1000.

Toyota e-lockers are rare & a lot of them are rusted out. Try to price all of the parts out new from the dealer. You can modify a standard axle housing to fit an e-locker 3rd member but you need cutting & welding skills. I'm pretty sure $600 is still cheaper than going the ARB route.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I picked up a 4runner rear e-locker(4.10) and housing last year for $400.
a few weeks ago I got a taco e-locker(unknown ratio) and housing for $475.

I was willing to pay a bit more for the taco rear, as it will bolt directly under my 1st gen.

I have one re-geared to 5.29's already. waiting to get the other one done, then throwing them both under the 85. going to be good!

I could have bought the whole truck a few months earlier for $1000. But some of us don't have the property to buy parts rigs, not to mention my wife wouldn't have the patience for me to part it out over 4 months. Just food for thought.
