What do you mean by underpowered?? Car & Driver believes that all SUVs should be under 6 seconds 0-60!:D It ran 8.0 seconds, which in my book, is pretty good for an off-road rig. My G500 runs anywhere from 8.5 to 10 seconds, depending on which test you look at. Your 3rd gen runs about 9.6 seconds. And H3 does have 300 horses and torque...then you add in the 4:1 transfer case...and it is far far from being underpowered off-road.

As for reliability, i agree. Hopefully, the iron front diff will solve some front diff failures seen on current H3s.

The Alpha might not be a rocket, but it's much quicker than the regular H3.

Pricing for the 2008 H3 is in my database. That V8 isn't cheap.

I didn't know they were dropping the Commander. Wow , I'm behind the times !!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure the H3 Alpha is got some nice power now , but I really don't think it will help sales. Maybe a high output V6 instead of the 5cyl. would be a better choice and replace the 5cyl. and just have a 6 or 8 cyl. option.

Inside seems small too. I swear my 4r has more space.
 
With the Liberty getting larger, the next Grand Cherokee will probably also be larger, and thus will replace the Commander as well as itself. It'll probably arrive for the 2010 or 2011 model year.
 
I was reading on a test in a magazine that the best mpg they could was 12. They even said GM was disappointed in it. That will narrow the market for them.

Although I like the H3 and almost bought one ( 5cyl. killed the deal ) I still think GM did this wrong and should have offered the 295 hp v6. This SUV actually feels smaller inside than my 4R. People are still very MPG weary. The v8 also pushes it to a higher price than a 6cyl. would.

If their main objective is to sell more vehicles ( which it is ) I don't see this as a smart move. They should offer the v6 & V8 instead of the inline 5.

I would like to know what the heck is the big delay with jeep installing the diesel in the Rubicon?? Or for that matter the revised 4.7 V8??

They'll probably wait until sales slacken for the V6. Or not do it at all, despite the obvious demand. Look how long it took them to get a four-door to market.

That may be true. My brother is looking for a Rubicon and it's extremely hard to get one these days! The Wrangler has been a big success for Jeep. The European model does have a diesel and was actually tested here in the States.
 
How much better fuel economy does the Euro diesel Jeep get over our USDM version? Right now diesel is $4.05/gallon compared to $3.40 for regular.

Not sure, but the additional power (torque & HP) from the diesel should make the Rubicon just about perfect. :) I think that the Jeep is using Mercedes Bluetec diesel (also seen in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee) which makes around 215 HP and 360-370 ft-lbs of torque. That is a nice bump in power for a small vehicle. I think that this engine gets around 30 mpg or so, which is almost double of what the gas engine gets (around 16-19 mpg). So, it may not be worth it financially, but the diesel should be quite fun on-road and off-road, should outlast the gas engine, and tow more comfortably. In other words, it's worth it IMHO.
