Anyone on here play Ingress? Originally by Google, spun off into a new company called Niantic. You may have heard of them from another game they produced called "Pokemon Go".
Except Ingress is for adults, so no chasing digital critters around.
Actual description:
Augmented-reality real-world location-based MMOG played with a smart phone. Strategy based play with aspects of Go (ancient Chinese game), Geocaching, and Risk. There are two teams: Resistance (blue, a.k.a. "smurfs") and Enlightened (green, a.k.a. "frogs"). Agents from each team try to capture portals (virtual objects that correspond to locations in the real world), then link those portals together in triangles for points. Lots of points requires working as a team with other agents over large distances, or you can just play solo. The points are recorded globally and accumulate every 5 hours. Every 30 days one of the teams is declared the winner of that cycle and the points reset. This way the score can't get permanently one-sided. New players can level up and be competitive relatively quickly. Exactly zero cost required to succeed, unless you burn a lot of gas driving around. Other than team color and quality of teammates there is no difference in game play between the two sides.
Sci-fi backstory description:
The Large Hadron Collider in Cern discovered a new substance called Exotic Matter (XM). Further study revealed this XM is being injected into our world through inter-dimensional portals by an alien intelligence known as Shapers. XM has been proven to influence human brainwaves.
Humanity has divided into two factions. The Enlightened believe the Shapers are trying to help humans. Enlightened agents attempt to create green control fields by capturing and linking portals; the minds of people living below these fields are being slowly molded and improved into their future destiny.
The Resistance know the truth; they believe the Shapers are trying to enslave humans. Resistance agents have figured out how to reverse the control fields. These reverse fields are blue and work to counteract the effects of the XM in an attempt to keep humans free from enslavement.
