Hey everyone my names Dara im from ireland
Been a long time lurker on here and this is my first time posting
I drive a 3rd gen Hilux surf with an intercooled 1kzte
The only mods so far are a set of maxxis bighorns in 265/75/16
extended diff tcase an gearbox breathers
And a 1.5'' BL that i still have to fit

anyway enough about me its time for some pics

Hey Dara! I'm another Irishman living in California! I moved out here 10 years ago.
Your rig is in absolutely amazing condition for a 1996. Is it a used import or was that model always available in Ireland? I remember years ago when my dad would buy used imports from Japan - they often came with features and models not available on the Irish Market.

Looks like your enjoying the Rig.. The car is registered in Galway but that doesn't look like Galway scenery? Looks like your up around wicklow / Dublin mountain area?

Welcome! Yeah what part of Ireland? I spent about a month and half out there and hitchhiked around for about 2 weeks. Man I miss the scenery, Guinness and Hurling.

Nice looking rig, its cool to see something like this from Ireland! I was surprised how few trucks and SUVs there were last time I visited. What area are you from?

There's multiple reasons you don't see many trucks or SUV's in Ireland outside of the commercial market. I think a lot of the reason you don't see many large vehicles in Ireland is road tax /registration fees and insurance increases a lot with the displacement of your engine. The general cost of ownership for a new 3.0 + liter motor is much greater than the typical sub 2.0 liter motor on the market. The initial cost of the vehicles is ridiculously higher than in the US and insurance in Ireland on large vehicles is astronomical. Also - the cost of fuel - Ireland like most Euro countries pays a lot more for it's fuel than the US - even with the recent increase in Fuel costs here in the US we have it much better than our friends in Europe.

thanks...what part of ireland are you from??..no the surf was never available over here it was imported 2 yrs ago im the 2nd owner...we got a 2nd gen 4runner with a 1kzte but they were never that popular compared to the landcruiser here so they're a rare site....Ya im from galway city myself thats actually out in conamarra about 40mins outside the city roughly

thanks....ya there is very few on the road over here but its mainly because the tax is so high on anything over a 2L
my surf wit a 3L td costs me 1290euro a yr to tax
but if it was a commercial truck it'd only cost 288euro per yr but then you need to have a VAT number to tax it

You hit the nail on the head my friend...but its not so much insurance an fuel thats the reason...its mainly tax....3L is the highest tax bracket but to tax a private 3L it costs 1290euro a yr
but that same 3L only costs 288e per yr if its commercial but you then need a VAT number to tax it as a commercial the last yr or so...the law was always there that only people wit VAT numbers could tax a commercial vehicle but it was never enforced until last yr so anyone could tax any truck with any any engine size for 288e until then..and as a result of the law being enforced alot of people were forced to sell up for somethin cheaper to tax
insurance isnt too bad really im only 24 and i pay 560e fully comp
payin for diesel is robbery though its at 1.41e per litre now when it was only like 80 - 95c per litre before the recession if i remember correctly...and petrol is 1.49 per litre

I visited Galway when we went to Ireland in 2009. We wife has relatives there and in Achill Island and Dublin.

Hey Dara, I'm a Dub! From the Dun Laoire area but I've spent some time out west. My best mate Uinseann lived out in Spiddal for years. He was out there for the language and the music - we had some great times out west.

I spent the majority of my time in Dublin by the city center because my friend was studying there. I also went to N Ireland for 5 days to visit another friend and had a good time. Wasn't fun having to use the pound. I also hitchhiked the southern route over to Galway. Unfortunately I didn't spend too much time in Galway.

Guinness is my favorite beer, so getting it fresh was just icing on the cake. I found it hilarious that everyone drank Budweiser over there. It's not the drink of choice around here, but I guess the grass is greener on the other side. Didn't know if you were a Murphy's man instead of Guinness. Definitely drank some hard cider while there as well.

Ah i used to go out with a girl from dun laoire,she was a freak!! hahaha
spiddels only like 10 mins from the city its nice out there specially in the summer but some the locals out that way are awful backwards hahaha.

Haha! Your telling me.. Here is a true story - not a word of a lie. My friend Uinseann was out at the local pub one night - He returned to his house (which was remote and a few miles outside spiddal) to find a semi naked guy ransacking his house. Apparently the guy was a bit "touched" and was truly out of his mind - he tried to get rid of the guy but he had some kind of crude weapon and fought my friend off.

He called the local Garda station and got no answer, only one garda on duty so he drove to the station - the officer said he couldn't leave his post but he'd put a call into one of the main stations at Galway. At this point 45 minutes had gone by. My friend worked as a Sparks on the TV show Ros na Rún so he drove to the studio and got help from the studios security guards.
They came down and tazered the crap out of the guy who was still making himself at home more than an hour later. They subdued him and after a total of 2 and half hours the Garda eventually arrived and took him away.

Apparently the guy was from a local "halfway" house for the mentally ill and took a walkabout one night..

Crazy stuff - the locals sure can be crazy out there... but apart from that we had great times. There's some fantastic music to be found out west.

hahaha thats funny!! id believe it though there is some serious fruit balls out that way to be fair...ha the garda couldnt leave his station because theres like 3 gards that have to cover all of conamarra from barna out as far as cliften an thats a big area for 50 gards to cover nevermind 3 alot the locals out that way tend to take the law into their own hands because of the lack of gards patroling the area..iv a friend from recess and we went out drinking in carraroe one nite and everyone just wanted to fight us cos we werent from there they're just loopy out that way an worse when they've drink in them haha

ah that was the english pound then in the north...i find it a pain anytime i go up there too.
