Is my 4Runner Aging well ?

Good Morning Community,

I have a 2015 Toyota 4runner Trail Premium with about 75000 miles on it(I feel like this is a lot ) and I wanted to do a comparison of my vehicles degradation to anybody else. Also I was curious what issues people have had and at what mileage, I haven't had any major issues my self a weird squeak here a flat tire there, Almost all issues are repairable with tightening something or taking it off.

To preface this I work a Valet Job so I drive 4runners fairly regularly and although it may just be paranoia I feel like there are a few noticeable differences between mine and others I have driven.

1: My vehicle SEEMS louder like when I crank and drive it around it just feels louder, Did newer Models get quitter?

2: There seems to me to be something I can only describe as a Ghost Flutter where if the vehicle is cold and I let off the accelerator this fluttering sound can be heard, I can hear it under the sound of the engine but it hasn't caused any mechanical issues. I can seem to hear this in other trucks but it isn't as loud again?

Other than those two things the truck doesn't seem to have a single issue besides wear and tear but I feel like they're coming (Again probably Paranoia)

SO let me know what you think and what you've had issues with, What I might expect or try to prevent.

4Runners are noisy. I doubt there is anything wrong.

Some people can clearly hear the ticking. Some people swear they don't have it. Some people complain. Others don't. They are all a little different.

But one thing that is overwhelmingly agreed in the community is that the 4runner is bulletproof. Noises or not.

Unless you have driveability problems or obvious bad noises, don't worry about it.

My 2017 sounds like a diesel ticking away IMO. It's loud and noticeable while sitting in the Starbucks drive through. No worries though. It's a Toyota and will last forever.

Sounds like you are too paranoid. It'll all be fine.

I was surprised at how loud the 4R is compared to my diesel Touareg.
Honestly, I don't think it's an appealing type of loud either (like an old V8).
It sounds like a giant squirrel fan to me.

My tires are loud enough where I don't hear anything else that is a minor noise. Out of sight out of mind, right?

One reason I bought my 2018 was because of how well my wife's '12 has aged. Yeah my doors close with a bit more positive of a thud, but her 4Runner is aging way better than my 2013 F-150 did.

I have bad news for you. With 75k miles already, you likely only have 300 or 400k more miles before you start having issues.

I have owned many V6 4x4 Toyota trucks (89 4runner/98 Tacoma/2001 4runner/03 Tacoma/12 Tacoma) and one thing I have noticed is how similar the noises they make, almost to the point of being erie. For example every one of them had a driveline clunk if I didn't grease the rear drive shaft regularly, they all had the diesel truck tick and the rear suspension was squeaky. Any vehicle will have a tendency to "loosen up" after that kind of mileage. But in my opinion they hit a certain looseness about them and don't go any further than that for a couple hundred thousand miles hence why I have owned so many. Ultimately OP is what I am getting at it that your truck is fine and don't worry about concerns because they are common Toyota quirks. Long term those quirks do not affect longevity of the truck. Poor maintenance and not replacing parts when needed is a thousand times worst. And the ghosting you speak of seems to be very pronounced in the 4.0s...my 4.0 Tacoma did it all the time but in the 3.4 it was a lot less noticeable.

My 2015 has a diesel ticking sound. Also has a sound coming from the front passenger side close to the front window area sound like wind, used to sound like a rattle but had dealership look at it a few weeks ago and they "fixed it".

I have 67k on a 2014. It think you're fine. There were some 2016s on sale with over 100k already on carmax.com selling for 29k +. ENJOY YOUR DAMN RIDE. You only live once.

I hear you (and it) but thats the reason I love this thing. I just changed the oil in mine (4 months old, 5 thousand kilometres on it) just to see how difficult it really was and give it a fresh sump for the winter, anyway - I thought fresh 0W20 Mobil 1 would quiet those cam gears down but nope - swear I can still hear them churning away in the drive through, seems like the injector tick or whatever it is - just as loud, cold crank and first 30-40 seconds until that clutch fan spins down is unreal, thought my Jeep was loud... so uhh yeah - finding more to love about it every day and those are exactly the kind of mechanical noises that put a smile on my face. Wouldn't change a thing.

Point is - heard all this from day 1 so being a newer model hasn't made any difference although I have been in a 2011 before (similar tires) and mine is noticeable quieter down the road overall... they sealed it up better for sure.

seals, gaskets, suspension bushings all wear and tear over the years, miles, various seasons. It's normal. Sure theres nothing like getting into a new vehicle every other year but not many of us can afford that.

^^^^Yup. I’ve got noises... clunks, ticking (a little), others.... some days I don’t like them, others, I don’t even notice. I read plenty of threads where guys chime in with their “worries” or whatnot, and I just chuckle... For me, after owning so many cars (usually every 2-3 years a swap-out comes), I’m just finally tired of it. Unless I back up, turn, and the wheel falls off... or I somehow get the Jeep “death wobble” going 55 down the highway, I ain’t sweating SH*T in this truck. I am firmly convinced at over 40 years of age that 99.9% of 4RUNNERS that come off the line are f’n bulletproof. And in 2017, in the age of my $700 cell phone that sucks a$$ after 1.5 years of usage... and the $100 coffee maker that stops working after 1.5 years... and the (insert other modern gadget that only lasts for a stupidly short time span), it’s nice to know I spent a chunk of money on a damn SUV that (should) have minimal issues for HOWEVER LONG I WANT TO KEEP IT, and I can literally drive it damn near ANYWHERE, IN ANY CONDITIONS. That little piece of mind makes me smile almost every single time I drive it. Period.

Long 4Runner rant over. Don’t sweat the small sh*t on these things man... they’re tough as nails... just not as refined as many of the 2017 cars and trucks out there. But hey, that’s why so many of us love ‘em....

Man seeing posts like this and more importantly the responses to it make me so damn happy. Have owned Toyotas since I 1st started driving and paid cash for my 1st Tacoma when I was 18. My dad had a 93 pickup that had 395k miles on it when he gave it to a friend and it's still going strong at 420k.

This is the 1st 4runmer that my family has owned. Very excited that I will have it paid off before we hit the 100k mile mark And can drive it for many years of worry free/non car payment miles is exciting.

My biggest issue are the heat shield that fall apart and rattle. The wrap around one on the exhaust towards the front had both bolts rust off, one at a time, so it would rattle like crazy until I replaced them.

Then on the trip one on the rear of the truck above the exhaust let go and was laying on the pipe....scared the you know what out of me when I slowed down as it was so loud. Had to reattached with massive washers to hold it up.

I truly think its a mental problem

Anytime you start "looking" for a problem - they seem to show up. I only have 45k on my 2014 but runs & drives just as good as the day I bought it. Granted there are some "features" but those are self-induced. I will say adding acoustic dampening material to the doors made/makes it seem better then knew when you shut it and get a nice thud.
