Is the 5th gen falling out of favor?

We came back from Moab this weekend, didn't see that many 4runners up there. Even had a guy question me about taking the 4runner off road.

Same happened to us. Wife was driving as we started up toward Tincup Pass in Colorado, and we had to wait for an older guy with his kid in a Jeep Wrangler to come down before we could continue. He stopped and looked at us and asked if we were going up and over the pass. When we told him we were he said "Not sure if you're gonna make it. It's too rough for something like that." Before I could say anything the lady throws up the devil's horns and proceeds.

The styling of the 4Runner looks like a tank and indeed is pretty off road capable but all the plastic trim and such large pieces...you can kind of see why people say that...not to mention having to buy a limited to get proper 4WD.

I'm seeing a lot more people parting out from the 5th gen platform and moving on. Has the 5th gen fallen out of favor?

The styling of the 4Runner looks like a tank and indeed is pretty off road capable but all the plastic trim and such large pieces...you can kind of see why people say that...not to mention having to buy a limited to get proper 4WD.

I don't understand why you keep harping on a full-time 4WD system being the only proper 4x4 system? There are far more part-time transfer case designs out there than there are full-time 4WD or AWD. They both have their place but I can see how a part-time system makes for more sense for the mass majority of consumers. Is it so difficult for you to flip a switch or push/pull a lever when you find yourself in need of 4WD? Personally I prefer having a part-time system when it includes front and rear lockers like our Power Wagon. Less wear and tear on the drive train and tires, better fuel economy, and a better turning radius and no power loss due to the drivetrain being robbed at 20-30%.

Front and rear factory lockers departed the LC platform a long time ago so even with their full-time 4WD system (same for the Limited 4R, Prado 150/GX, and manual transmission FJC) you still have open diffs that require a necessary upgrade to the drivetrain in order to make it more capable.

Because I'm spoiled by my 3RD Gen It feels like they took a major feature away by going with the transfer case they did on the 5ths.

In reality, my 4WD use is 1% of the time.....roadrunner here, so your observation about it being perfect for people like me is spot on. Will shut up about it since we do love our big black tank (Black Betti Mk II) :-D

Why is everybody so angry today? LOL. I've made peace with what Toyota hasn't provided in the 5th gen. Until the redesign comes, there's no sense in re-engineering anything substantial. They'd never see a return on that investment of time and resources. So, we drive what we have. Rage at them jacking up the MSRP. And wait...

Not angry, just frustrated. Technology is not the savior, but can be very helpful when applied correctly. Humans have become very reliant on apps to solve our problems and it is annoying.
