Late spring/ early summer road trip...

Want to head somewhere late spring, early summer. Leaving from central Texas...about 5 days, so that pretty much limits me to CO and NM. I think UT would be stretching it a bit.

I want to see mountains and drive passes...stuff we don't get to do in Texas.

Initial reaction to head towards Silverton and go from there. This is more of a scenic trip/ overland than rock crawling adventure.

What else/ where else should I look into?

I am not a local but I think you may find passes still closed that time of year until snow clears, got exact months in mind? Maybe a CO resident will chime in. Silverton is a great area and more then enough to do for a few days (assuming travel is coming out of your 5 days)

Don't what kind of hobbies you have, but jump on old rt 66 to gallop NM, awesome MT biking town. It's been written up in a bunch of mags. When I was there it was pouring so I didn't get to ride, but I wish i did. But if you can make the stretch Utah is amazing. If your a rock climber, AZ has some sweet spots too!

I'm thinking late July, early august at the latest...boys will still be on summer break, so the possession schedule will be week with us, week with their dad.

Don't what kind of hobbies you have, but...

I'm lucking enough to have ridden road and mtn in all of the above states. No bikes this time around. Just a camera, my wife, and maybe our dogs...

Colorado has the garden of the gods, go see a show at red rocks, even norad lets you tour Cheyenne mountain, but you need to set up an appointment a week early so they can do a background check. There's pikes peak too, that would be a cool drive. They paved the entire thing now, so no dirt ( bummer) but it's still cool to go to the top.
