Its on the same 120 platform, so basically. Lexus one has many more bells and whistles on it compared to the 4runner (expectedly so). One of the major differences though is that the GX doesnt have the rear roll down window that everyone loves on the 4runner

Is this vehicle basically a 4th generation 4Runner with the V8, in Lexus clothing?

From what I understand, NO.

The chassis is the same, but engine and body are different.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: current GX460 is a second generation Prado which debuted in 2010. The 4th Gen 4Runner's last year was 2009, so no, it's not a 4th gen nor is the engine the same. 4th Gen's V8 was a 2UZ-FE. Current GX uses the 1UR-FE V8. Different animals.

I guess they're going to phase out the BOF on the GX with the 2016 model moving to something of a crossover. I think the new ones do have a rear window that pops open, but yeah doesn't slide down. If they hold the pricing I'm thinking the 2016 GX might be my next 4Runner.

Decent price drop but that still leaves an MSRP of 50 grand...For that kind of money you could buy a nice new 4runner, supercharge it and still have money left over. They might make for an interesting option in the used market.

It's a different V8? I was reading complaints that it's the same 10 year old technology.

Yep, different V8. The current V8 has 347hp vs. the old 4Runner's V8 rated at 260hp. Engine architecture might be similar though. Toyota/Lexus V8s are bulletproof. Period.

Subtract 46hp and you have what the GX460 is making. Not 347hp.

Engine architechure is completely different as well. The 1UR is more like the 3UR in the Tundra. Dual VVT-i. Timing chain instead of a belt.

That's true but I guess I'm hooked on the V8 and quite frankly my 4Runner experience makes me think it's worth it. If you look at the price difference between the Lexus and a Limited, for me getting the V8 is a justified up charge. Seriously what other Luxury SUV at that price point can provide that kind of certainty for 300K essentially trouble free miles.

And then there's the accident issue. These Unibody luxury SUVs get in comparatively modest accidents and with the severe associated depreciation as they approach 100K miles they're totaled.

I get used as a battering ram by a box truck and it's only $8200 in damage.

It is basically a 5th gen 4Runner with a Lexus body and the Tundra's lil V8 engine tucked inside of it. It actually is built on the 150 platform which the new 4Runners, Prados, FJCruisers, and (IIRC) Tacomas are built on; the frame is essentially the same as the 120 platform but built with different steel in certain areas from what I learned on the 5th gen thread it was mentioned on.

The 1UR-FE is built much like the 3UR-FE (5.7L V8) equipped in the Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruisers. The 4WD system is more similar to the 4th/5th Gen systems though, but is also full-time 4WD like the GX470. It lacks the rolldown rear window that the 4Runners have and Lexus has annouced it is giving the GX the axe come 2016 in favor of some sort of disgusting TX Crossover (aka... blasphemous unibody construction) and thus the legacy of the mid-sized full body on frame SUV comes closer to an end...

Essentially the GX460 is more equivilant to a 5th gen 4Runner with the V8 Package (god I wish that existed...) much like the GX470 was built much like a 4th gen V8; the body paneling and goodies inside might be different but the underpinnings and drivetrain are similar to the 5th gen 4Runner. Which is why I think Toyota was idiotic to offer the anemic 2.7L I4 instead of the 4.6L V8, which they wouldn't have to modify much of anything other than attaching a 5th gen body rather than a GX body...

Either way, they're probably gearing the price lower in an attempt to sell more of them prior to switching to a new platform all together.

The power numbers indicated earlier in the thread are actually incorrect and reflect the GS and LS equipped 1UR-FEs and not the GX vehicles, corrected comparision is as follows:

GX460 1UR-FE: 224 kW (301 hp) and 446 N·m (329 lb·ft) of torque
GX470/4Runner 2UZ-FE: 260 hp (194 kW) and 306 lb·ft (415 N·m)
(Numbers from a combination of Wikipedia and the GX460 product pages)

On a side note- Wikipedia states the 2UZ-FE in the 4Runners is a ULEV engine, so does that mean I get to have those neat Carpool stickers like you see on the Hondas? :D

That chain need replacement at 90K as well?

You should not have to replace a timing chain in under about 200k unless it fails prematurely. Many people say you "never have to replace a timing chain" this is an exagerated statement as the chain, gears, chain guides, and tensioners wear out and will cause slack and potentional problems later down the line; but again, we're talking in the 200k+ range. Timing chains are also far more expensive to fixe when they do go bad due to the fact that in my experience many chain failures result in crack front covers, damaged casting, and the labor to replace them is much more than a timing belt.

All in all timing chains when working as intended are far more robust and last longer than a timing belt, yet come with their own risks and inherent issues.

If I recall Lexus also gets thicker glass for sound deadening and much better sound deadening everywhere. I love the memory steering wheel etc. also.

Ah yes, I stand corrected. It makes 347hp in the LS and GS models. Land Cruisers (and Prados) are detuned to 304hp. Sucks. But torque is robust (and that is what matters in these SUVs)
