Hey everyone, I have been lurking on here and getting some ideas. I recently bought a 1987 4runner and will be doing a overland type build. This thread will be picture heavy!

I am calling this the Roll Tide build because I picked her up in Alabama. Here is the day I picked it up.

After putting in a new battery and terminals, I checked the timing and checked fluids. I got her started and found a bad exhaust leak at the base of the exhaust manifold. I decided to tackle this while I wait for my Weber carb to come in. I plan to do new exhaust down the road so did a temporary fix. I used a wire wheel to clean the exhaust manifold and block, then threw some high heat paint on.

While waiting for the carb I also picked up some old steelies off a 1991 Toyota pick up. I am selling the wide 33x12.50 and mounting 33x10.50. I am just not a fan of the wide look. After getting the wheels I had them sandblasted and have done 3 coats of primer using great dane. It is some great stuff, I have friends that use it to help coat their boat axels so it holds up pretty well. Also got the tires in from tirerack. Will be painting the wheels grey tomorrow and will have them on the truck soon! Anyone know where I can find another one of the sweet toyota caps?

Finished the tires today. Sprayed 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of new ford grey and 2 coats of clear coat. I am liking the look, reminds me of the steelies on the FJ40s.

I have made a lot of progress over the past several weeks. I put all new brakes on the front and back. Replaced the seals on the hubs and replaced all the diff fluids. I installed a new fuel pump and brand new weber carb. After doing research the 22r that was swapped into the 87 was from a 2wd. I needed to swap the oil pans and add the proper 4wd oil pick up tube. You can see from the photo where the steering linkages were making contact with the oil pan.

The po swapped a low mileage 22r out of an 84 hilux into the 87, she runs very well after adding the weber carb, I am located in Corpus Christi and the Spring area of Houston, just depends on what time of year haha. I am slowly getting it the way I want it!

Thanks, I think so also, the 33x10.50s look perfect on the 1st gen. I will be posting several pictures over the next few days.

Last week I removed the old carb and did an EGR delete with LC Engineering block off plates.

I installed the new weber carb and regulator, carb is receiving 2.8lbs of pressure.

This week I repainted the grill and badge, I went ahead and got all the new grill clips from the Toyota dealership, I think they ran $1.95 each. After I reinforced the front crossmember and did some mods to the old smitty front bumper. I plan on building new tube bumpers for the front and rear with a winch plate. But I like the temporary fix to get it inspected.

Well done thst front crossmember had seen better days, I grit my teeth when I saw it lol.

Thanks, it will make a world of difference when I build a bumper later! Really need to toss the body lift and do the suspension.
