Lumber Storage in Garage

I don't work with wood too often, but do like to save my scraps for future projects. And of course, it'd be nice to buy what I need for a given project and not have to cut it up immediately upon getting it home just to store it.

For those reasons, I want to build some storage in my new (to me) garage. Unfortunately, internet searches for lumber or wood storage get far too many hits unrelated to my needs, instead including all kinds of shelving built from wood.

I'm actually thinking of building a rather thick, hollow 'door' with a caster or two at one lower corner and hinges attaching to the wall on the opposite long side. I have several items in my garage I can easily move out of the way, so if I could 'close' the 'door' up against the wall when not in use and return the other items next to it I'd really be making use of the space. Watcha think?

Does anyone have any nifty methods?
Custom storage solutions?
Ideas?
Stuff they've seen?

What about an overhead rack/platform that can be lowered for access, then raised within a couple feet of the ceiling, keeping it out of the way of everything? I've seen pre-made ones, but I don't remember where (it was a while ago). I'm sure a Google search could turn up something.

I just stack my scrap steel/lumber in the corner and lean it against the wall if it's bigger pieces. It's not ideal but it works. I never saw the need for organizing the scraps that are always coming and going from the pile.

I have a 4x8 sheet of plywood spanning the rafters. Everything too short to fit between is on top of the plywood shelf. Before I had the plywood as scrap, I used some 1x8s about 2 feet apart, spanned the rafters, then place the short pieces between the 1x8s and parallel with the rafters. All free, all easy.

While I'm not afraid of putting stuff overhead (see my topper hoist), I don't want to do that with this.

Thanks for the link. I've poked around and gotten a couple of ideas to augment my own. Still leaning toward the 'door'.

I simply have some heavy-duty shelf brackets from Home Depot mounted to the rear wall of my garage. The brackets, themselves, extend outwards about 2 feet and have them spaced about 5 feet apart, 3 rows veritcally. The longer "scraps" serve as a base on each level and I stack the shorter/smaller ones on top of each row.

Pieces that are wayyy too small end up in a big bin and become either fireplace kindling for next winter or fodder for the fire pit.
