Merle Haggard, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and one of the most influential singer-songwriters in the field’s long history, died Wednesday morning (April 6) — on his 79th birthday — in California following a lengthy illness.

Grew up with my dad playing MH on his guitar...

Always liked him, even though he got a little too liberal politically for my liking, but he could sing. My wife and I listened to Poncho and Lefty last night on YouTube.

Saw him live three times. Two of the worst concerts I have ever been to, but the third was greatness.

I have been trying to decide what my favorite song of his would be. and I can't do it. Just too many great ones. He will be missed for sure.

I guess Willie is the only one of that group left.

If you want a treat, pick up a copy of "last of the breed". Willie did a record with merle haggard and Ray Price a few years back. Fred Foster produced it (one of the great old school country producers) and it features guest appearances from kris kristofferson, vince gill, boots randolph (the guy who did "yakety sax" aka "the benny hill theme") and the jordanairres (backup singers for elvis and many others).
