hey guys i need a little input
i have a 2002 4x4 limited v6 with 155,000 miles.
i have a slow speed clunk that is coming from the mid to rear end of the car.
i checked the shocks and springs
i checked the rear upper and lower control arms as well as the panhard bar
i changed the rear diff oil and the transfer case oil
both show to be slightly metallic, but no flakes or chunks of any kind
the car drives fine shifts fine, goes into awd, 4wd both high and low no problem
the center diff locks no problem
i have some play in the drive shaft but i dont think its excessive from what i have read
is there supposed to be no play at all?
i lubed the drive shaft and nothing.
its not the spare tire or the tow hitch i removed them and checked

my thoughts now are drive shaft u joints or rear wheel bearings maybe
there is no fluid leaking from the rear axle seals
the clunk mainly happens when going over small bumps at parking lot speeds. i can not hear the noise on the freeway at all.
what else should i check
thanks

Check the bushings on the sway bars, especially the sway bar links.

check out your engine and transmission mounts. my other guess would be u joint if you already lubed your drive shaft.

good thinking ill check the mounts
i think imma pull the rear shaft and drive in awd so fwd and see if i can get the sound that should tell me if it is the shaft

did yours come out of nowhere?
mine came after an offroad trip. probably should have mentioned this earlier.
that day i jumped it and was in some good two wheel teeter toter action.

let me know if you figure out what your problem is

After nearly pulling my hair out, I was able to finally pin-point the cause/location of my clunk/thump/rattle. The rear cross-bar on my roof rack was missing the screw-down roof rack knob thingy.

Ah I wish mine was that. I have a Whitson roof rack and I checked it its tight.
Mine is deff coming from underneath the car
