MPG on the info center dropped.

I tried searching but couldnt find what I am looking for. On Saturday the mpg reading on the info center was fine....well kind of. For the pas 2-3 weeks it has beeen reading 18.5mpg around town. I never really changed much. It use to change all the time. Anyway, on Sunday I noticed it was down to 11-13mpg. I tried resetting it but it drops down to 12.5mpg. If I really stomp on it I will go down to 7-8mpg. The runner seems to run fine, and I havent noticed my actual mpg drop. Any ideas ? Its a 04 4.7L.

+1. If you really need to know MPG, get a Scangauge or Ultra-gauge. You can calibrate those and they are amazingly accurate.

The factory MPG indicator is worthless.

It shouldn't change much since it's the overall average so it should stay within 0.1 or so of the same reading unless you reset it. 18.5mpg around town sounds about right. When you reset it then it starts at zero and builds up so 12.5mpg sounds right until you get on the freeway and bring it up.
If it keeps going down it may have a loose connection or someone keeps pressing reset.

I dont really go by it that much, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't caused by some underlying problem like a TPS on its way out. I have owned it for about a year and it always reads around 18mpg around town. When I get on the highway it would go up to 20-21mpg.

try replacing your air/fuel sensor, that's before the CAT on both sides and you'll see an increase. I have a v6 and have 82k miles on the odometer and now i'm only getting pretty much around 270 in a tank of gas. it used to be around 350-400. there's one post here that when he replaced his a/f sensor, his mpg increased dramatically. i'm replacing mine in the next couple of weeks, just waiting for the tool and will let you know the results.

Do you mean the O2 sensor? I would test it first before replacing it since they are rather expensive.

If you clear the MPG indicator, it will calculate the mileage from the number of miles you have driven. if you stomp it with no miles on the clock, it's just like the "instant MPG" function on the scangauge.
