My $45 Door Seal Mod

Ordered mine and will do it this week. I already have my entire doors and interior lined with dynamat too and am getting majority of my road noise through the door seals I think. Will post updates when I'm done!
 
Did the doors in ~30-40 minutes today. Didn't do the rear hatch seal as I'm not too happy with cutting the complete circle, fearing moisture would get in somehow into where I cut it up. Given I already sound deadened my doors and floor this did help with the wind noise when you're cruising 80mph. Just a little bit of a difference but for the price it's worth it. Great seal on the doors for sure now, maybe overkill. :) Now I have more wind noise with my Gobi rack and moonroof but not sure there is much to do that beyond remove the rack. Hey for ~$45 on Amazon, I'm happy with the simple mod. Much easier to hold a conversation doing 85mph now in the vehicle.

OK finally got around to driving more and here is my final verdict. 45-65mph this mod coupled with the sound proofing in my doors is amazing! Above 65-85 it's improved but not as noticeable since I run 275/70/17 BFGs in E load, light bar on a gobi rack, 3" lift in front, and have a moon roof. It's about as good as I'll get without dropping the headliner and putting more sound deadening up there (still might just looks to be a pain).

Also still debating on doing the rear gate/hatch but need to figure out if cutting the seal to install the tubing will do more harm than good.

That is the exact one I bought. There are many similar tubings out there. Just make sure it's continuous so that you can fill each seal with one piece. Not sure how it would work if you had to feed multiple pieces through.

Has anyone done this any experienced any problems over the longterm? I know some plastics/rubber materials don't play well together and can cause the other one to melt/degrade over time if miss-matched. Did the silicone lube degrade the rubber or did anyone else notice excessive wear or anything after doing the mod? I ordered the tube referced by the OP and am planning on doing the mod this weekend while I replace one door lock actuator that failed in my 2010 SR5 5th gen. Might as well do the seals on all 4 doors while I'm messing around with. Any longterm issues after having the mod for a few months or so? Thanks for the great mod and post

It's only been ~6 months from my original post, but I haven't noticed any deterioration of either the door seal or the latex tubing. Honestly, you probably won't even need the lubricant if you're worried about it's effects on the other components. I got it as a fail safe, but didn't have too much trouble pulling the tubing through the seal.
 
I would totally do this if my seals weren't so chewed up!

Thought on running the hose through: Would compressed air make it easier?
It's my general method of installing grips on bikes.

Any leads on new door seals?

im gonna go supercheap and try paracord.. i seriously doubt there would be issues even if things took a little longer to dry

Funny you mention chewed up. My door seals have an inordinate amount of wear on them. Mainly the faces that make contact with the door. In a few areas they're actually worn through.

I am the second owner, but I can't imagine what on earth anyone could have done to cause it.

[MENTION=101043]JMZ400[/MENTION] We're also the second owner of our 4Runner and I've never seen this happen to any of my other vehicles.

It's happening primarily on the bottom of the seals (rear hatch and front doors since the rear doors don't get nearly as much use). I am making a guess that it's due to the getting into and out of a taller car where the footwear probably catches the rubber.
 
After looking closer mine must be from driver and passenger getting in and out. Still weird.

This mod was popular in one of the Ford forums several years back. I did it on my 04 diesel van with electrical fish tape and some liquid dish washing soap for lube. I sold the van 8 years later with no visible deterioration of the door seals.
 
I don't know if this will spark a comment or not, but has anyone thought about this helping with the rear door latch issue? I have added the electrical tape to the latch to quiet the squeak (some time ago) and now it's starting to squeak again. Before I re-tape the latch, this thread came to mind. There was a comment above that it can leave the hatch door ajar a bit if you're not careful, so that makes me think it takes some of the movement out of the rear door.

Anyone experienced this? Or noticed the noise before adding the tubing, and not after?

Did anyone do the rear hatch? I too was leary of cutting the seal , maybe if there was a solid way of joining the ends back together.

are you using a special cleaner or spray or lubricant on it? I never have and have never experienced anything like this in my Toyotas. Garaged? or exposed to elements
