my sunroof needs viagra

ok so I have a problem with my sunroof
first off, I have a 97 limited 4x4 with 197k mi. going strong but the sunroof is acting up. I hadn't used it for several months due to weather.

now when I press the open or tilt buttons the sunroof just moans sadly as the electric motor tries to open it but doesn't have enough power.

is there a cheap fix for this. I can drop down the ceiling but dont want to remove the actual sunroof unit which I understand us a pain in the ass.

check for wire connections maybe that motor is just old

the vehicle is 15 years old and the sunroof motor is now lacking the power to fully work.

I would like to know if any one else has fixed this.

also make sure ur sun roof its not out of track, sometimes these things gets off track or not enough lube are going thought the track so it may slow down the function, and the sunroof moves really slow on these rigs in the first place so if i was you i'd check to see if its even the motor's problem and start check on the roof it self hope that helps.

Does it move at all? If not, I would have someone hold the button for you and try to 'help' it along and if it will open you can clean/lube the tracks.

It moves and until recently worked perfectly.

Now it slides open fine but when I try to "crack" it open, the motor isn't strong enough to open it, it just gets stuck partly open. It is able to perform and assisted open, where I push up on it as I hold the button. Assisted it opens fine. It also doesn't have any problems closing.

I just sprayed it down (the tracks and linkage) with silicone spray and the problem remains. I think the motor is going bad.

My next question is "has anyone replaced the motor" for the sunroof assembly?

From the sound of it the motor is in the front of the roof, sitting just above the garage opener, mirror and center console lights. I would have to remove the interior roof which is a lot of work, well about 2 hours apart, X hours to put back together. Looking at it, I do NOT think I would have to pull the sunroof assembly out.

I've never done it but theres no need to remove the whole assembly, like you said you can get to the motor just by removing the head liner.
