Need New A/T Tires - Survey Results from Tire Rack

I have really enjoyed the sets of BFG A/T's I've run on various 4x4's. They look awesome, ride quiet and smooth for such an aggressive looking tread, and they flat out grip in a wide range of conditions. I'm a stick-with-what-works kinda guy, so that's what I'd buy. Maybe not the "the best" by the ratings, but good enough all around that you can't go wrong. Not gonna last the longest, but it's one of the true "off road" type tire that you can drive on-road without compromise.

FWIW, I never really liked the looks of the REVO's and never understood the big deal....longer tread life I guess.

I took the truck to firestone today to look at their Destination ATs - wasn't impressed! They are definitely a step down from the Revos in both looks & functionality.

The good news is that they did a tread depth on the old tires, and found they still had 55% good wear left - not bad for 40,000 miles! The guy commented that there was some minor chunking (due to various off-road trips) but the tire still looked good - and he REALLY wanted to sell me a new set. But after seeing the depth remaining he realized it would be a while. Ye haw! I'm certainly in no hurry to spend tire money, and at this rate they likely will go another year before I start getting serious about replacement. Besides, that's what is supposed to be a real selling point of the high tech Revo - it keeps it's grip & integrity far into the tread wear.

I then went to Costco to do some grocery shopping, and in the mean time have the Revos (which I had a new appreciation for) rotated. Unfortunely Costco doesn't sell Bridgestone any more (wonder if the Firestone dealers complained?), but they said they can order a set of BFGs for about $155 each. They run a special of $15 off per tire a few times a year, so . . .

I figure my top choices now are the BFG, or perhaps even another set of Revos. If this set gets the kind of mileage I think it might (60k+), and maintain their integrity, then that's pretty hard to argue with - even if they are nearly $200 tires! And Firestone often runs $25 off per tire.

So in the final analysis it looks like this:

$170 tire (Revo after $25 off)/60,000 miles = $.0028 per mile

$140 tire (BFG after $15 off)/50,000 miles = $.0028 per mile

UPDATE: Well big dog turd - now I can't find the BFG AT KO in the stock size - only the BFG TA Rugged Trail! The Rugged Trail is much more poorly rated than the KO - double dog turd!

UPDATE2: Looks like the Revo & Yoko Geolander AT-S are my only "decent" choices for stock size.

I have the Nittos and they are great for off roading, and relatively quite and handle very well on the road. They are wearing much quicker than I thought they would though- 25,000 and I'll probably only get another 5-10,000 out of them. Then again, they are one of the cheapest out there, and I do drive them hard.

And I never noticed any loss in power with the slightly larger size- 270/70/17.

I've read that about the Nittos with some people. While I started this thread thinking there was no way I would get Revos again, due to their higher price, they are starting to look more attractive due to the mileage I'm getting. Some tire will wear quicker later in the tread life, but supposedly this is one of the things the feature-laden Revos is supposed to do well on.

After discussing this issue over on RV.net, I think I will stick with the stock size. I just don't want to make the engine & tranny work 3% harder up steep mountain passes in the summer!

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for a replacement for my Revos on the '01. Overall, I've been happy with the grip and tread life of the tire but it has never been a smooth tire. I didn't realize the difference until we got the '07. I have about 40k on the Revos and still a lot of tread left BUT they are done because they are really chunked up. Before I hear the poor maintenance claims, that's not the issue as I have had them regularly balanced, rotated, and the alignment done.
