No issues at all. Only replaced shocks, brakes, battery and serpentine belt. The 2011 didn't have all the computer stuff and sensors that can go wrong. It also had bulbs not LED lights. The finance guy (tries to sell the extended warranty and wheel and tire care package along with lifetime oil changes) said that the tail light assembly has to be replaced if any of the LEDs goes bad. He said it will cost over $1000 for the assembly. VERY SCARY!!

Dang, that sales/finance guy was really doing his job that day....$1k for a tailight is quite a stretch.

Your 2011 absolutely had all of the traction, stability, etc etc etc sensors that could go wrong. Only thing really new would be TSS, and that isn't that many more sensors in the grand scheme of things.

$1k for the taillights? $195 part from Toyota. Was he talking about the new headlight assemblies w/ LED? That would make more sense...

You can probably get a longer extended warranty for less or similar - someone posted that thread earlier.

With a '21, you can connect your phone directly through CarPlay or via Bluetooth. Don't bulk the thing down with a CD player...

Turns out that there's no way to lock it from the outside when the engine is running. AND...even if the smart key is in the house, you can still put it in gear and drive away. What were the thinking at Toyota...no remote start factory option...they should have kept the key with the remote and made the smart key an option.

Looks like I have to find somebody to install an aftermarket remote that works with the smart key like the one mentioned earlier in this thread.

This part, at least, is the same on my Subaru. Once, my wife picked me up at the dealership after the Tech had gotten in the car to drive it into the bay. An hour later, while I'm 2 miles away in the middle of some Tikka Masala, the dealership calls and needs me to bring the fob in so they can get my car out of the bay. oops.

I think that's all vehicles, honestly. Never really understood why. My previous Jeeps and my wife's VW Atlas does the same.

I used to work for Enterprise awhile back. Rented someone an Altima with a smart key. She drove all the way home without the key that was in my pocket from when I pulled the car up. Realized i had it 30 minutes later :doh: Didn't do that again!

Toyota has an OEM add on remote start that goes at least through the 2019 4Runner : PT39889140 - Remote Engine Starter - Genuine Toyota Accessory Note: the part number works for both the push button start, and the regular key start vehicles, BUT there are different installation instructions for it depending on what start version you have.

There are aftermarket (non-Toyota) remote starts, but I wouldn't trust them for they often butcher the wiring for installation which will void your warranty.

With synthetic oil, your 4Runner needs an oil change once a year (the six month service is just a tire rotation), thus your service agreement would be for 10 services at $200 each. That seems high to me. (Remember, all new Toyotas sold in the US come with FREE scheduled maintenance for the first two years, so be sure any extended maintenance agreement starts after that)

Update: I went to the custom add-on shop that did my tint on the 2011. They have a VIPER remote that works with my factory smart key. It operates the same as my old factory remote and is plug and play...no cutting or soldering. Since I don't want to wait until March for weather that's warm enough to work outside, I'll let them install it. $289 plus tax. A lot better than the Toyota stealer!

It is a Viper DS4 remote start.

Most keyless entry systems work this way, even my 2016 BMW M235.

Also, warming up your car by idling is downright terrible. It's hell on the catalytic converters and spark plugs and dilutes the oil with fuel. It also uses a ton more fuel and takes much longer to warm up. Lastly, it does nothing to warm up the rest of the drivetrain.

The ideal, safest, and best way to warm up a stone cold, iced over vehicle is to start it and scrap the ice off and then drive moderately until the motor and drivetrain is warmed up.

If the vehicle isn't iced over, simply start it and let it idle for 30 to 60 seconds and drive away. The vehicle will warm up way faster.
