I've been searching craigslist on and off for the past few years hoping to find a clean 1st gen 4cyl 5spd. Well last Thursday I passed one of those sketchy used car lots with a nice looking 1st gen on the corner! Rolled past it again on Friday and had some time so I stopped to check it out. Looked really clean so I asked the sales guy about it. Turns out its a one owner rig that was the tow vehicle for an old mans RV. Yeah sure right??? It has obviously been towed by the apparatus on front, the running boards lend some credence to the old man story so I looked a little further. It shows 211,000 on the odometer but the interior looks like it's never been sat in. In the glove box was the most meticulous set of maintenance records I have ever seen! The salesman pulled the title for me and sure enough it was the original owner since 6/87. Ok, lets go for a drive, this thing is tight! Drives better than the outback I've been driving! To make a short story long I wrote him a check on Monday and am finally the owner of this 1st gen 4Runner! :banana:

I can't wait to start making it my own and will surely need some advice along the way so here I am!

Great looking 4Runner [MENTION=123733]E92FF[/MENTION]! I miss my 1st gen every time the sun comes out... Great little vehicles.

Do you have any plans for it? Where you at in the PNW?

For now it's replacing the Outback as my commuter so I plan to keep it pretty much stock. I'll pull the running boards and tow stuff this weekend. Then I will look into doing something with the rear suspension to level it out. Hopefully by summer I will have a soft top for it.

In the next few years I would like to get another subaru (like a 5spd Legacy GT) and make this more of a trail rig. Nothing wild, maybe 6" lift, 35" tires, gears, rock sliders, bumpers, winch, etc.

I'll probably re-power it at some point as well. I'd like to put a 2TR-FE 2.7L 4 cyl out of a newer Tacoma in it. I'd forgotten how gutless the 22-RE's were!

Probably should have mentioned something about myself.

My first truck was a 1980 Toyota long bed 4X4. Pretty much been a toyota fan ever since. I beat the hell out of that poor thing and it never complained. I did a 4" lift, 33X12.50's, and a webber carb. It was a fun truck.

Replaced it with a 1987 extra cab SR5. Kept it stock for a long time. Eventually the tranny went out and I bought a '97 Tacoma SR5 V6 extra cab. With the Tacoma as my commuter I put a chevy 350, and turbo 350 trans in the '87. I also did a 4" suspension lift, 2" body lift, and 35" tires. Had a blast in the Oregon Dunes with that truck! Sadly I got tired of dealing with emissions crap and sold it.

As previously mentioned I also had a '97 Tacoma. Great truck but couldn't fit a car seat in the back of it. Traded it in for the Outback when my 1st born arrived. So happy to finally get back to my roots with another Toyota!!!
 
Wow, that's a sweet 4R

I'm in Black Diamond, so not as far south. We don't say y'all, like y'all ;)
