I just installed a Warn M8000 winch in conjunction with mounting my new Shrockworks front bumper on my third generation 4Runner. What's the best recommended method to properly wind in the steel cable (not synthetic rope) to ensure it is taught and aligned and not overlapping incorrectly nor pinching he wrapped cable underneath the spool?

hook it to another vehicle, so there is a good amount of pressure on the cable, and feed it onto the drum by hand.
wear good gloves, and keep your hands back 15-20 inches, don't look away from the spool while its running.
its also best if whoever is working the cable, is ALSO running the controller.

along with that i find it nice to have a 18" or so pry bar to help guide the line all the way over to the edges of the drum/spool before coming back across.
its gonna work even better if your rig is on a slight hill/grade -if you dont have any hills or slopes around you can set the ebrake and spool in the line that way.
make sure you have the truck running, do not ever try to winch with the vehicle shut off unless the vehicle wont run or running the vehicle could potentially damage the vehicle(ie hydro lock or under water ect.). a winch will drain a battery fast. and its best to have the motor RPMs up off idle, 1500-1800 should be fine your alt will be at max output at that rpm range
