No audio until vehicle restart

Occasionally, really only a few times/year, my factory stereo will have no audio output on any mode (AM/FM/CD/SAT...). No matter what I do, no audio will come from the speakers. If I pull over, turn the truck off, then re-start, everything is fine without even touching any control.

Has anyone seen this behavior? Vehicle is 2008 Limited, factory system with Lockpick installed. I put the Locpick in very soon after getting the truck, so I am not sure if that has any impact, wouldnt think so.

If you dont know what Locpick is, you can go here . It allows me to use the Nav system controls etc while the vehicle is moving. Without it, most controls are grayed out, you cant set a destination etc....

Our 07 does it too. JBL non nav. If you crank the starter again while the truck is running even while driving it won't crank instead it resets the radio...fixes our issue every time and no need to stop. You may want to test it out once in the driveway running in park so you can see what to expect. Hope this helps.
 
My JBL does something like this, sort of. The radio will just freeze up to where you can not change channels or volume on both the head unit or wheel controls. Turning the key off and then back on fixes this. It does this about once every couple months.
 
Mine did it once last year. But i knew i had to clean the disc player as per disc error, so i bought a cd disc player cleaner and cleaned it. After that and a sprinkle of holy water, no more probs.

Come to think of it mine does this exactly. Regardless the key trick should still fix it...
 
My aftermarket system does this as well, probably once every few months, heh. The drive-and-crank-the-key trick does fix it, however, so it's not an issue.

I had this problem with no audio in my 2003 4-runner once or twice a year. I never tried turning the key while the engine was running though. I found it frustrating to have to wait until I could stop the car before I could hear music again!

I just replaced my stereo with a new JVC Kw-XR810 and had the same thing happen to me 3 times in two days! I hope this is just bad luck and not a sign of bad things to come. Each time this happened to me I had the car in park, engine off, radio on; then I turned the key to start the car (thus restarting the radio in the process) and after the engine/radio started up, all looks and no sounds (everything appears to work, track timer is going, level display is bouncing, and when i fix the radio issue the song starts up where it should be if it had been playing the whole time).


does anyone know what causes this problem? I'm assuming it has something to do with the ignition or something. Anyone?
 
On one occasion my jbl stereo wouldnt let me change volume but everything else seemed to work... Problem magically disappeared the next time i started the engine, and hasnt happened since.
 
solution?

spoke with an audio installer...

he seems to think it is caused by the amp shutting down due to the circuit board freezing, and as soon as it thaws out or the condensation wears off you're back in business.

one solution he suggested was to buy a $500 5 channel amp and replace the whole thing.

short of that he had no real suggestions
 
yes that works great if you have the chance to pull over, turn off the car, and start it up again, but i've had this happen to me on my way home from work and had to sit in silence for the 40minute commute home on the freeway.

While your fix, works to solve the issue each time, is there an actual solution that prevents this problem from happening at all?

You're not understanding, you can turn the key, while driving and it will reset the radio, you don't have to pull over to shut the truck off. Just turn the key while it's running and it will reset your radio. No idea of a way to prevent it, but it's an easy fix
 
Ok so I re-read the thread and I agree I'm stupid.

I guess I was thinking back to my old '84 Accord days when turning the key while the motor was running meant nails on a chalkboard sounds from the starter.

Good to know, but again isn't the real fix.

I sure would like to know the actual cause and solution.
 
I have a similar issue with no sound coming from the radio/cd, but restarting hasn't helped. I still need to try the turn-key while its running, but I've went through all of the fuses and all look okay. Was wondering if there is a fuse in the back of the actual radio or the amp? Will try the turn-key reset at lunch to see if it fixes the problem.
 
My 2003 Limited JBL w/ Nav does this a couple of times a year..... Good to know about the key thing... Will have to do that next time.....
