No longer a 4 Runner owner

First of all, very sorry to hear about this. People really do suck. Now to debunk a couple things.

1) The old trick of sitting in a parking lot with a scanner and duplicating RF signals doesn't work. It did 20 years ago but not anymore. Today's keyless entry systems and aftermarket alarms have 20,000 plus codes stored in them. A different code is used every single time until all codes are exhausted and then it starts over. If the same exact code is sent back to back, the system locks itself out for a predetermined amount of time.

2) No, there is no way even a push start car can be started without the fob. Today's coded keys are extremely hard to crack.

3) Absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever stop a thief. Other than maybe a 9mm or 3 to the chest. I used to repo cars, there wasn't a car on the planet we couldn't take and generally we didn't even have to get out of the tow truck to hook up to it. Very likely it was towed, very unlikely it was driven away.

Anyway, let's hope whoever the POS was that thought they deserved your 4Runner more than did suffers fiberglass insulation in his underwear drawer.

Wouldn’t that just work with a fob and keyless ignition? Doesn’t seem like that would work with a keyed ignition.

When they stole my FJ Cruiser years back, they punched out the door lock and then just pulled a bunch of wires out from under the dash.

I was in my apartment upstairs about 15 yards away and from the time the alarm went off to me walking over to the window (about 45 seconds) they were driving off.

I once saw this once this in an amazing display while standing curbside at O'Hare baggage claim. Guy parks curbside gets out walks around to passenger side, standing 2-3' from the passenger door facing the baggage claim doors. Tow truck whips in front backs up with his lift lowered, slides under front wheels lifts and goes in less then 30 seconds. Driver doesn't notice until lifted, he got out a yell, but it was already gone. Impressive and scary how fast our rigs could be yanked.

Also ebay. My son's $3K bicycle was stolen right out of our garage. Turned up 2 months later on ebay placed by a local pawn shop. Teenage kids had taken it and pawned it. I informed the local police, they got it back to us a few days later. I was told the pawn shop paid ~$200. for it, police paid nothing when they grabbed it back.

While visiting my son in Aurora, Co. over Thanksgiving some dick decided he wanted my 4 Runner more than I did. Sunday morning at 1:30 AM my daughter-in-law saw it parked in front of the house. When I got up at 5:30 it was gone. In addition to the vehicle, I lost a ton of belongings including all of my photography lights, all the survival equipment and recovery equipment that was in the vehicle.

Not sure how they got it. I still have the keys in my possession. From the tracks in the snow it looks like a vehicle drove up to the driver's side, one person got out and got into my locked vehicle and left with it.

20 day wait before insurance will act. I know that in the future I will add a club to all our vehicles. Don't know if that will completely solve the problem, but surely it will help.

If anyone sees a Silver 2017 Off Road premium with a lift and SSO front bumper with winch in the Denver area, please contact the police.

Bill- I am really sorry to hear about the theft, and your missing 4Runner. Thieves will get it, no matter what protections are taken, if they really want it. They're pretty simple trucks, they're in high-demand for parts, and likely worst of all... in Colorado you could hide in plain sight in a silver 4Runner. I am in CO at least once a year, and when I was in Denver/Highlands Ranch/Glenwood Springs/Aspen/etc just last week you couldn't spit without hitting a 5th Gen 4Runner. Like many others have said, and based on your description of the tracks in the snow... someone probably nabbed your key-fob code to gain access.
