No oil came out of my filter

A while back I discovered that doing my own oil changes was not financially responsible. It cost almost the same to have it done and I don't have to get dirty or deal with the used oil. I trust the place I use and I'm usually standing with them while they do it. I wouldn't trust the truck to just anyone. Today I did my own because someone gave me a free filter and I figured why not. I cant remember ever having a situation where zero oil came out of a filter that I just took off an engine. Like I didn't spill a drop. I looked inside and it was slightly wet with oil, but even putting it face down did not drain any oil?! Is that odd? WTF? The truck was hot and I started this about 10 minutes after a 40 minute drive. I pulled the filter about 15 minutes of it sitting and draining. I really would think that some oil would come out. Typically oil changes are a mess but I cant remember the last time I did one on this truck. BTW it is a Wix filter. 220k on the truck. 5w30 dino oil and it does not consume a drop in 3k (or in this case 4k) miles. Truck runs smooth and quiet and I run it HARD. Like 65mph up hill with 33's on stock gearing high rpm in 4th gear hard. That 22re loves every minute of it. Anyone got any input on that?

no help here, other than to suggest using toyota filters. i buy them at grappone in bow. buy three, get one free. cost is not appreciably different than a wix. fwiw, i used wix exclusively in my legacy for 15 years. car had 300k on it when i replaced it.

I've got a good connection for OEM filters if need be. But then I have to change my own oil because I dont want to be that guy that brings his own parts to an oil change. Just wondering what the issue is here? Is it normal? Does it matter?

I haven't ever had that happen to me... but I'm sure the place would put in the parts you bring.

I was gonna say maybe the shop you've been going to uses shady filters and the anti-drainback valve inside had failed, but WIX are usually pretty good filters. Maybe you just got a bad apple...

So long as the oiling system is in good shape, and the oil level is correct, you probably weren't in too much danger. Although initial startup is a bit more stressful...

That's exactly it. If I am to use OEM filters, I'd have to do it myself. I bet if I asked them, they would stock the OEM filter for me. Maybe that's an option.

I did notice a bit more "rukus" lately on startup. It doesn't do that now with the new filter. ( I was given a mobil 1 filter for free, hence what started this convo).

i look at owning a much older vehicle as necessitating doing a good bit of the routine maintenance myself, including oil/filter changes. take it to the dealer if the pepboys or whatever can't do it right, and you are unwilling to do it yourself. they will use the oem filter so you won't have to provide one.

start to finish, i change the oil/filter in my '87 4runner 22re in 35 minutes.

many shops will install customer parts, but will not warranty anything related to the installation, including failure of the part.

sometimes there is an additional charge for customer supplied parts as sell.




as to the original issue, that is strange. I cant say I've ever experienced that. I would think the anti-drain valve either malfunctioned, or was non existent in that filter, and the oil drained down into the pan.

based on your post about the extra noise on startup, I think its safe to say that is what happened.

I've seen this a lot on older (90's) Toyota 4 cylinder cars. Pull off filter and it looks almost bone dry. I can't explain it, but it seems to be common from my experience. Is yours the 22re? If so then it's likely no a huge deal as long as you don't have a knock. If I'm not mistaken the oil pressure at idle is like 3 psi or something minuscule.

Yeah it can be alarming, but I can think of one 96 Camry in our customer base with 280,000 on original engine. Never misses an oil change, runs great. And had almost zero oil in the filter. If you are super worried you could slowly back filter off with it running to see if oil sprays out. Just be careful! It WILL get messy

I’ve had my truck for about 6 years now and almost every single oil change my filter is “dry”. I’ve only used Toyota filters as well. Weirdest thing but there doesn’t seem to be any issues and I don’t mind oil running down my hand so I’m good with it. When I used to work in the auto industry(10 yrs) every so often I’d work on a vehicle with this “issue” and loved every second of it
