Oh dear, I almost bought a Tercel today

I know, not a 4runner, but still a classic yota. I went and looked at a 1988 Tercel hatchback with a sweet 1.5L in it, ha. Anyways I almost pulled the trigger on it for $500, but was torn whether or not I need another nightmare Toyota. Was wondering if any of you guys have experience with them? Reliable? cheap to fix? I know little about them. I figure it cant be any harder than dealing with a 22re and certainly a breeze compared to my 3.0. Needs a front end overhauk and the suspension seems a little beat. Seemed to run well and the mpgs are so so alluring... Maybe just good enough to counteract the sheer embarrassment I would feel driving it.

If I had $500 and the inclination and time to work on another rig, I'd grab that in a heartbeat. I'd love to slap some sliders and skids on a little Tercel 4wd and flog the bejeezus out of it.

Ha yeah tearing around in the thing would be pretty sweet. Best of all, anything you do to them only improves their looks. They are a damn ugly car. I might still go for it. Guy knows I'm interested and said it was cool if I slept on it a night.

my older sister had one when she was 16 and it rotted out so bad the mechanic said to scrap it so i got to drive it around on my folks back 40. i bombed around in that thing like it was a dune buggy/ baja car. it lasted 3 years of that abuse, no oil changes or anything before the rear end rotted out and both wheels were up in the trunk permanently
