Oil consumption on V6

I have the dipstick issue where I get a reading far above the full mark on the dipstick after a 5.5 qt oil change. I use Amsoil 2000 and can extend my oil change intervals. My question to those that have a functioning dipstick and do extended oil changes - how much oil consumption do you see w/ your V6?

I use Mobil-1 (5w30 viscosity) in my V6 4Runner and notice that it will typically use anywhere between zilch and half a quart between changes (about every 3,000 miles or so). Most vehicles I have owned consumed at least a little bit of oil - even when new. Half a quart over thousands of miles does not indicate any trouble. Now, if you are puffing blue smoke and dropping in a quart every time you get gas - then you have a problem.

Yeah, I know most of you think that is too often to change the oil when using synthetic.....but too bad. It's my truck until January, and I am "old school" when it comes to that type of thing. Cheap insurance in my book, ya know.
:awais:

As for the dipstick, it is almost impossible to see the oil level until you get at least a few hundred miles after a fresh change. That Mobil-1 is very clear. Oh, and why does Toyota just use two "dots" on the dipstick rather than "FULL" and "ADD" markings? Yeah, probably because they export their vehicles all over the world.

In addition, if you're checking the oil level before firing up the engine after your oil change, the oil's not yet circulated, filling the oil filter, etc. So it might read somewhat high at that point. Not sure exactly what "far above the full mark on the dipstick" means.

The dipstick issue has been brought up by others on this site. Seems to affect some V6s and not others. No matter when or how the measurement is taken, it reads high - as in a half in. above the full mark. Put in 5.5 qt at the oil change and after 6000 mi it's still well above the full mark (cold engine, warm engine, doesn't matter).

I use Amsoil 2000 and am doing UOAs. My last UOA at 6000 mi indicated that I had fantastic wear metal #s and that the oil is still in v. good shape. I just want to guage how much oil I should add since every engine burns some oil. There's just no way for me to tell how much because of the dipstick. I'm going to scratch a line in the dipstick after my next oil change so I know how much 5.5 qts is. Any one actually measured the oil consumption?

jcm,

If you think your dipstick is defective then perhaps you should consult dealer service. Oil level is very important.

Using Mobil 1 5W-30 EP in my 2006 V6 4.0, I never burned enough oil to need even one quart added between miles 4,000 and 14,000. I was quite amazed.
