Ok that's it I give up! Impossible Toyota readiness drive pattern for evap system.

Hey, I just ordered that tool that you have right off Amazon for $14. I hope you see this and can tell me, does it automatically pop up that it is EVAP ready?

I failed inspection today with catalytic converts and one other not reading, inspection guy asked if I changed a battery and I said yes in October, he said that is the drive cycle. After that I drove to Gateway Toyota in Toms River, NJ where I bought the car and showed them the inspection failed paper and they too said its drive cycle, just drive around and run some errands and it should work, but of course I rather not just take a guess than drive back to Lakewood.

So will that auto show the evap ready?

Please let me know and thanks!

Yeah that scanner will check your monitors to see if they have passed or failed.

Once you get the scanner, lookup what monitors haven't passed then search online or just here to find out what the protocol is to get that particular monitor to run and pass.

Some of these can be a real pain since certain conditions have to be met for the test to run and pass successfully.

I take back what I said b4 abote you California dudes being lucky. This smog bs makes up for the clean undersides.

I gave up as well..I have knock sensors codes and those would come on before I ever reached "readiness" (yes i had a code and obd2 stated evap was not ready)

anyway,

If someone is looking to get through the "drive cycle" or "monitor readiness" states, refer to this PDF. Be sure you're looking at your year as the drive cycles vary.

Asking you here so I didn't hijack the other thread. I've had the P0440 & P0446 come up by themselves on separate occasions. Currently I have P0440.

Did you use a 9v battery to test the evap vent valve & multimeter or circuit tester probe to test the plug that goes into the vent valve?

Was the crack in your canister visible while it was installed or not until you removed it for closer inspection?

I did a visual inspection of my charcoal canister, hoses attached to canister, & fuel tank filler hose without removing anything. The hoses & canister seemed to be "in good shape" with no visible signs of damage but will actually remove the canister for a closer inspection next week hopefully.

From researching P0440 & P0446 the items listed below seemed to be the issue:

1. Evap vent valve on the charcoal canister

2. Crack in charcoal canister

3. Damaged hose on charcoal canister or fuel tank

4. Overfill check valve located on top of the fuel tank

The FSM list many other areas but will probably start with 1-3 of the above list. If 1-3 check out to be fine then I will look into 4, overfill check valve. Not looking forward to having to lower the gas tank though.

I hate to say it but VSVs on the can rarely fail. 9/10 it's stupid little hairline cracks on the can. I pretty much have painted my entire can in JB WELD now. I had it fixed for a year and code came back. Found more tiny cracks and coated everything with the JB. Haven't had a code in months. I REFUSE to pay that outrageous price for a new can made of plastic and filled with activated charcoal.

That turned out to be the case for me because my vsv on the canister passed all the fsm tests. My P0440 turned out to be overfill check valve gasket on the gas tank. I could faintly hear air escaping from it when I was doing a pressure test per fsm instructions. I replaced it back in November and passed emissions. Everything has been allgood since.

*The overfill check valve is only on 01-02 for anyone else dealing with an evap code.

I/M Readiness Resets

I recently got a 2002 SR5.

When I start the car and I have 4 monitors (CAT, O2S, HTR, EVAP) showing "Incomplete". I drive around using normal driving conditions. I test again at some point and all of the monitors come back "OK" except for EVAP. I think I'm fine in my state having one monitor "Incomplete".

My issue is the next morning it's like I'm back to square one and the 3 monitors (CAT, O2S, HTR) are showing as "Incomplete" again. Maybe I don't understand how I/M Readiness works, but shouldn't the monitors remain "OK" until the car is cleared with an OBD2 tool or the battery is disconnected?

Well now I'm a little worried... I just got the p0446 code a few months ago and when I clear them they go away for about 800-900 miles. I haven't done any fixes since I've been busy with work and school, the last code came up 3 days ago and it cleared and hasn't come back.

I have only cleared it 2-3 times so far, but now after reading your post I'm a bit worried about the emissions stuff since I'm in Cali too. You wouldn't happen to have any info on what part goes out the most would you?

It's probably the charcoal canister. Take it out and pour jb weld or your favorite plastic epoxy in any and all cracks. You'll be good to go.

Regarding the EVAP monitor being incomplete and still passing smog, that depends on what state you are in. I just had a discussion about this in another sub-forum regarding the law in California. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/gener...-monitor-not-complete-ca-can-i-pass-smog.html

As for the monitors all reseting overnight — that's not right but I don't have any idea of what would cause that other than the ECU losing power somehow. IDK – that's way above my expertise.

Seems like it's usually the canisters that cause the most problems. That's where I would start looking first.

It was my obd2 reader that was resetting them when it was connected to the car and the reader powered off then on at any point without being unplugged. I got a new reader and all is well. I passed the emissions test.

All this just so you can pass emissions?! God, I hate California - well, their government anyway. I'm so glad I'm in Indiana...we have no emissions testing whatsoever. My truck had 2 sizable exhaust leaks that hadn't been repaired yet when I went to go get plates and Indiana just doesn't care. It's pretty awesome.

I really think I have a EVAP issue. It's been 450 miles and two tanks of gas and the EVAP didn't set yet. At least in my area a 97 is allowed to have two monitors not set. And my pending P0420 Cat efficacy code let me pass inspection. The P0420 finally set today.

The Rear O2 sensor at times swings as high as the preCat which is bad. To me seeing .820 at times means the O2 sensor is good and no gasket leaks.

Did some research, having the same issue on my 01 4runner. Emissions test showing evap and catalyst "not ready" and the vehicle needs to run thru a drive cycle. As per the manual, the drive cycle is slightly complicated. Anyone come up with a simple way to perform a drive cycle to get all the systems ready for emissions?

Evap & Cat Rediness

First time posting but have used this site for help with my 4Runners for many years. I recently had the same issue with my 2002 SR5. I read all of y'alls posts and which were all helpful in identifying my problem. I know this thread is a few years old and your issues have probably been resolved but I wanted to post my experience to help others in the future.

I live in metro ATL. My county requires a 2002 vehicle to pass all emissions tests. My 2002 kept failing for rediness for Evap and Cat. I had no codes and no CEL. Vehicle ran perfect but would pass rediness. I did multiple drive cylces and drove near 1000 miles and still the same result after multiple retests.

After checking the canister and hoses I decided to build a smoke machine to test the evap system. Using the port under the hood on the drivers side I smoke tested the Evap system. I noticed a small amount of smoke from around the gas cap. Knowing I already changed the gas cap with the same test result (not ready) I dug into it a little further. Around the top of the filler neck there is a molded grey plastic sleeve. After removing the filler neck it appeared as though this sleeve was a little loose. Since the sleeve can't be removed or replaced I would up ordering a new filler neck assembly online from one of the Toyota parts places online ($195). That darn filler neck was the issue all along. Once I took it to be retested it showed as ready and passed!!

Hopefully this information will be helpful to anyone challenged with the same issue.
