Older gen Heep Grand Cherokee

While checking out my newly acquainted '95 4Runner the other day on a lift in a auto shop, I couldn't help but look at the Heep Grand Cherokee next to it. The undercarriage is alot cleaner, but there is no FRAME! It looks to be unibody. I was taken aback. I thought the Heeps all had a body-on-frame like the 4Runner does. Did anybody else know that?

Actually, the ONLY Jeep that is still body-on-frame design is the Wrangler line. I am not sure when it happened, but at least for the past 2 generations, Jeep GC and Jeep Cherokee are unibodies. The Commander is also unibody.

Jeep calls their unibody, "Uniframe". It is a unibody that is reinforced at certain area with "frame-like" gussets. This is nothing unique because every unibody SUV out there has these support gussets, including my old 1997 Honda CRV.

The GC is basically a supersized Cherokee (XJ)...don't know about the GC, but the XJ unibody is quite strong. It was actually designed in Europe during the time when Renault owned AMC/Jeep.

The XJ seems to be unique as it seems that most of the 'road going' SUVs have unibody type structures.
