OME 890's - Internal Bumpstop or No?

I am about to swap my LC 8-wraps with OME 890's, because the LC 8-wraps had way too much rake. I had the internal cone bumpstops installed with the LC 8-wraps, and was told that I could remove them and it would drop the rear down about 1/2" - 3/4".

I wanted to know if I should install the new OME 890's with or without the internal cone bump stops. My only concern is the springs rubbing directly against the body, without the padding provided by the bump-stops. I doubt they'll actually function as their bump-stop definition intends, since the OME 890's are higher than stock coils..

Here's a picture of what my current rake looks like. I am on the 3rd perch up front with Tundra/TRD coils and Bilstein 5100 shocks.

I had the cone installed with my 890s on my 1st truck.


2nd truck I didnt use it with the 8 wraps. But I did get extended brake lines, SS adjustable pan hard, 94 4R rear sway bar links. Took more to get the 8 wrap setup to be used properly then the 890s.

I will be using 5100/890s on my current build with the cone.

I do also have the extended steel brake lines, but not the panhard drop. I have another set of stock 4runner bumpstops, and was thinking about "stacking" them on top of the existing ones, to extend them. I don't want to bottom out the new shocks and blow them.

Hopefully I'll be able to guess how far to extend them down, using a tape measure to guess where the axle will be when the shocks are fully compressed.

I was referring to the external bumpstops (the ones situated on the frame that hit the actual axle, close to the wheels).

Extend your bumpstops by the amount of lift you gain. It will be close enough even if you're ignoring the geometry from the shocks being at an angle. Hell, Toyota used different height springs over the years of the 3rd gen with the same height bumpstops in all of them.

Yours looks just like mine did with the same suspension setup. You'll be much happier with the LC springs gone.

I'm a dumbass and didn't take measurements when it was "stock" - which was 265/75/16's and stock suspension.

And csp, did you use the internal cone bumpstops as well?

I believe I remember reading about your mechanic telling you that you had too much rake with 8 wraps, what are your feelings about it?
I am running 861s with the internal cones, yea its a lot of rake but I like it, and I am added a few hundred pounds more into the back.

I did use the internal cones. They won't do much, but there's no reason not to use them.

Everyone has their own tastes but I agree with your mechanic that it is too much rake.

It looks like a cat in heat, sticking its butt in the air trying to attract a suitor.

I think the OME 890's are a good idea. I am not running the factory rear bump stop and don't have any issues without it. As I recall the early 4Runners didn't have those bumps between the coil and the floor, but I could be wrong. I think you're fine to run it without. However, the OME should really bring down the rear and you might find you want to run the bump stops.

Post of pics after you bring down the rear. I am curious how much the OEM's will drop the rear.

Reviving this thread. If there is a more appropriate thread for my post, let me know;
I am installing OME 890 rear springs with BL 5100. Seems important to protect shocks from bottoming with bump stops. What do you guys think of using shock/strut stem cushions on the under side of the shock stem mount to 'bump-stop' the shock itself? (I learned this with 1/10th scale remote control trucks.) This way you do not need to do any measuring except to make sure there are enough cushions between the shock body and stem mount to prevent bottoming.
